Overview

HMRC's Fraud Investigation Service (FIS) is responsible for the department's civil and criminal investigations. Covert Operations, Digital Exploitation (CODE) sits within FIS. CODE provides investigative tools and covert techniques to front-line investigations, works with key partners to develop and provide access to new technology and systems, and enables investigators to respond to serious and complex tax evasion and crime. The team delivers and maintains specialist sensitive IT infrastructure and a national network of services to HMRC investigators across 24 sites, supporting secure data use for elite investigation services. CODE Technology delivers a broad portfolio of change initiatives to sustain and transform FIS's legacy technologies and deliver innovative solutions designed around customer needs. This role sits within the CODE Technology team and is integral to the wider CODE Capability, Development, Infrastructure & Innovation (CDII) team. It supports His Majesty''s Government''s fight against serious and organised crime, underpinning investigations that total hundreds of millions of pounds each year. This requires specialist network and technology, which the CODE Technology Infrastructure team supports. As FIS grows, so does the need for Infrastructure support. This Senior Infrastructure Engineer role is an opportunity for an experienced, forward-thinking individual with a passion for technology, able to deliver exceptional user support, grow knowledge, and work with a supportive team.

Responsibilities
  • As a Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer, ensure robust, reliable, high-performance systems and services meet business needs.
  • Build, administer, maintain, and monitor diverse systems including servers, storage, endpoint management, networks, telephony, and business applications.
  • Collaborate with the Infrastructure Manager and fellow engineers to provide third-line support and project delivery across a wide spectrum of IT systems.
  • Engage with other teams and departments outside IT to achieve shared objectives.
  • Influence future technical direction within a dynamic and innovative team environment essential to the delivery of FIS Infrastructure and Technology.
  • Oversee preparations, delivery and support of IT operations solutions and services (physical or virtual) according to industry and organisational best practices and KPIs throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Assist in providing outstanding services and ensuring consistent levels of capability.
  • Work with technical architects and engineers to translate architectural designs into products and services.
  • Support third parties in providing infrastructure services.
  • Provide input into overall management (workforce, budget, technology roadmaps, projects and tasks).
  • Provide direct support in strategic capacity planning and continual service improvement.
  • Provide specialist technical support and assistance to projects to ensure delivery of functional and non-functional requirements.
  • Respond to incidents and problems within agreed SLAs.
  • Be familiar with installed hardware and software and procedures in the IT Infrastructure area.
  • Lead and direct infrastructure specialist teams in building, managing, supporting and maintaining solutions.
  • Develop and coach junior team members, sharing technical knowledge and best practice.
  • May conduct technical workshops to assess business requirements and support changes to existing services; identify requirements and quantify benefits.
  • Travel within the UK for meetings and infrastructure work; occasional overnight stays. Work out of hours on an on-call rota (weekdays and weekends) as required; reasonable daily travel from base office.
Requirements
  • A UK national.
  • Hold SC clearance or be willing to be SC cleared to take up duty and be prepared to attain DV clearance.

Additional Security Information: The successful candidate will be required to apply for Developed Vetting (DV) clearance level once in post but must already hold or be willing to obtain Security Check (SC) clearance level before starting the role. The successful candidate will undertake the following (not limited to):

  • Technical aspects of the role include overseeing the preparations, integration delivery and support of IT operations solutions and services (physical or virtual) according to industry and organisational best practices and KPIs throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Assisting in the provision of outstanding services and ensuring consistent levels of capability.

  • Providing input into overall management (workforce, budget, technology roadmaps, projects and tasks).
  • Providing direct support in active management of strategic capacity planning.
  • Providing specialist technical support and assistance to projects, ensuring delivery of functional and non-functional requirements and continual service improvement.
  • Responding to incidents and problems within agreed SLAs.
  • Being thoroughly familiar with installed hardware and software and the procedures in use in the IT Infrastructure area.
Leadership
  • Lead and direct infrastructure specialist teams in building, managing, supporting and maintaining solutions.
  • Develop and coach less experienced team members, sharing technical knowledge and best practice.
Desirable Criteria
  • Full UK Driving Licence
  • ITIL 3 or V4 foundation
  • CompTIA Security+ or higher cyber security based
  • CompTIA A+ or higher network-based qualification
  • Experience in Cyber analytics and security standards e.g. implementing a SIEM solution
Interviews and Selection
