We are inviting applications for the position of Senior Fellow in Pancreaticobiliary Medicine at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in the department of gastroenterology. The post holder will be able to pursue further training in all aspects of benign and malignant PB medicine and participate in dedicated clinics and regional MDT meetings. Training in ERCP and/or EUS and advanced pancreaticobiliary endoscopic techniques will be delivered in at least 5-6 dedicated lists per week. It is expected that applicants will have commenced training in ERCP but prior EUS is not essential. This post will be supervised by Dr Matthew Huggett, Dr Bharat Paranandi, Dr Simon Everett and Dr Aaron On and is available from September 2026 until September 2027.
This post is fixed term for one year and is not accredited for training. In addition, there will be a requirement to provide inpatient ward cover for G(I)M as a Consultant Physician. These duties will involve daily morning ward round duties for 7 consecutive days in a 1:7 rotational basis. There will be no additional out of hours on call commitment, and these duties will attract an uplift in salary to consultant equivalent rates of pay.
Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice by the intended start date.

The post holder will contribute to 1 clinic (pancreatology clinic) and 1 endoscopy list per week. The remaining sessions will include at least 5-6 dedicated pancreaticobiliary endoscopy lists a week, attendance at the regional benign and cancer pancreatic MDTs and time to undertake project work. Training can be tailored to the candidates career plans and experience i.e. training in ERCP only or both EUS and ERCP. The fellow will participate in vetting and assessing patients referred for ERCP/EUS and other advanced endoscopic procedures (to include ward reviews before and after procedures). In addition, there will be a requirement to provide inpatient ward cover for G(I)M. These duties will involve daily morning ward round duties for 7 consecutive days in a 1:7 rotational basis. During these weeks, afternoons will remain free for subspecialty training. There will be no additional out of hours on call commitment, and these duties will attract an uplift in salary to equivalent consultant rates of pay.
The post is offered for a fixed term of one year. The post supervisor will assess achievement of the following objectives mid-way and at the end of the post.
The Leeds Gastroenterology Institute is based at St James's University Hospital. We also provide outpatient services at Leeds General Infirmary and Wharfedale General Hospital. We are a large yet cohesive department. We provide care for all aspects of gastrointestinal disease to a large local population and have 2 inpatient wards in the modern Bexley wing at St James's. The hospital provides a regional and supra-regional service for benign and malignant pancreatic and liver disease and the gastroenterology department has close working links with pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery, hepatology, radiology and oncology services.
We have a modern high specification endoscopy unit which has recently been upgraded with the latest generation of Olympus equipment as well as enhanced EUS processors to allow for elastography and contrast EUS. We provide a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Candidates should hold a primary medical qualification, a membership of one of the UK Royal Colleges of Physicians and hold a CCT (or equivalent) in Gastroenterology and General (Internal) Medicine. Candidates must be independent (JAG accredited or equivalent) at diagnostic gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and therapeutic gastroscopy (haemostasis). It is anticipated that candidates will have had significant experience in ERCP (in excess of 100 procedures) but prior experience in EUS is not necessarily required. Candidates must be eligible for registration with the General Medical Council and hold a certificate in Advanced Life Support from the UK Resuscitation Council, or an equivalent.
We have a weekly programme of departmental CPD activity. This includes histopathology and clinical governance meetings, journal article and clinical topic presentations. There are opportunities to develop teaching skills in ward based or more formal settings, including simulation training. Leeds also runs a yearly ERCP course and there are plans to expand the number of courses offered involvement in the delivery of these courses will be encouraged. An annual appraisal (in accordance with GMC requirements) will be arranged, along with use of the Trusts appraisal toolkit.
