Senior Fellow in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Weare inviting applications to recruit a Senior Fellow in IBD at LTHT. We areoffering an opportunity for a post-CCT gastroenterologist, to pursue advancedtraining in all aspects of the management of patients with complex IBD in ourtertiary referral unit. The IBD fellowship at Leeds has been endorsed by theBSG for post-CCT training.

Thispost will commence in May 2026 and is fixed term for 12 months.

Thesuccessful candidate will join our large, enthusiastic and dedicated IBD teamand enhance their skills and experience in the care of patients withinflammatory bowel disease. They will also have the opportunity to developrelated endoscopic techniques in our modern endoscopy departments which haverecently been refurbished with state-of-the-art equipment. Expertise within thewider department encompasses inflammatory bowel disease, advanced endoscopy,pancreaticobiliary medicine, small bowel disease, nutrition and academicresearch. The post is not accredited for training.

Candidates must be registered with the GMC and hold alicense to practice by the intended start date. In addition, there will be arequirement to provide inpatient ward cover for GIM. These duties will involvedaily morning ward round duties for 7 consecutive days in a 1:10 rotationalbasis. There will be no additional out of hours on call commitment, and theseduties will attract an uplift in salary to consultant equivalent rates of pay.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will contribute to 4 clinics perweek (2 IBD clinics, 1 joint surgical IBD clinic with general gastroenterologyon alternate weeks, 1 flare clinic). The remaining sessions include preparationfor and participation in the IBD MDT, working with the IBD nurses on urgentqueries, supernumerary attendance at other specialist IBD clinics e.g. thepregnancy clinic, time to undertake project work and/or training in endoscopictechniques such as chromoendoscopy, pouchoscopy and EMR; this will depend onthe requirements and experience of the post-holder.

TheLeeds Gastroenterology Institute is based at St Jamess University Hospital. Wealso provide outpatient services at Leeds General Infirmary and WharfedaleGeneral Hospital. We are a large yet cohesive department. We provide care forall aspects of gastrointestinal disease to our local population in excess of800,000 and receive regional and national referrals into our subspecialtyservices.

Weoffer the expertise and enthusiasm to provide advanced training and experiencein managing patients with complex inflammatory bowel disease. The Leeds IBDService looks after approximately 4000 local patients and regional referrals.The IBD team includes 9 consultants, 7 IBD Nurses, an administrator and MDTcoordinator. We have great support from an experienced dietitian, pharmacist,GI radiologists, histopathologists and nutrition team. We have close links with colorectal surgeryand 4 IBD surgeons who contribute to the IBD MDT and combined

Job responsibilities

Thepost includes a commitment contributing to work on CRN Portfolio trials andobservational studies; one of these sessions takes place within the IBD clinic.The post holder will join our enthusiastic and successful Clinical ResearchNetwork (CRN) team under the supervision of IBD consultants. The role will bean excellent opportunity to experience and learn management and conduct ofclinical trials, including GCP accreditation, taking on the role ofSub-Investigator for one or more studies and optionally networking in the CRN.The post holder will always work closely with the CRN team, particularly theResearch Nurses, to carry out clinical trials duties. At the end of theFellowship, the post holder will be in an excellent position to take on aclinical research role in his/her future career.

Therequirements of the service may change during the year and the job plan may beadapted to include evening or weekend endoscopy lists.

Thepost is offered for a fixed term of 12 months. The post supervisor will assessachievement of the following objectives mid-way and at the end of the post:

Learningoutcomes at the end of the fellowship

1. Competent in managing medical aspectsof IBD including a sound knowledge of biological therapy use and complicationsand nutritional aspects of IBD care

2. Understand the role of surgery in IBDmanagement and involve surgical colleagues appropriately

3. Competent and independent inchromoendoscopy and pouchoscopy

4. Have completed a research, audit orquality improvement project

5. Understand the role of clinical trialsin IBD care and have contributed to patient recruitment

6. Understandthe importance of patient involvement in IBD and contribute to the patientpanel and CCUK meetings

Person Specification
Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
  • Awareness of GMCs Good Research Practice guidance (General Medical Council, 2010)
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC and a current licence to practice.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • JAG accreditation (or equivalent) in diagnostic upper and lower endoscopy and independence at therapeutic gastroscopy (for haemostasis)
  • Current ALS certification or equivalent
  • CCT in gastroenterology and general (internal) medicine
Experience
  • Evidence of competence in management of common gastrointestinal conditions and emergencies
  • Evidence of competence to work without direct supervision where appropriate
  • Evidence of achievement of CT1&2 competencies in medicine (as defined by the curricula relating to Core Medical training)
  • Evidence of completion/near completion of higher specialty (ST3 and above) competencies in gastroenterology or relevant comparable overseas experience.

  • Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems Ability to prioritise clinical need Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk
  • Recognition of, and ability to undertake the initial management of, an acutely ill patient
