About the Role

While youll have heard our name theres a lot you probably dont know about NEXT. Like how we create most of our systems ourselves whether its a website mobile app or application. Whats more were growing. Fast. And its the kind of growth and investment that is exciting for everyone in our business.

Our huge warehouse estate in Yorkshire is held together by the Warehouse team the warehouses have an enormous amount of tech that allow us to receive store pick and pack items for our customers - handling everything from socks to sofas! The Warehouse team focuses heavily on automation which includes 40 miles of conveyor linking everything together across our sites hundreds of storage and picking robots - a very fast moving continuously changing part of NEXT Technology.

Technology drives what we do. Plain and simple. As were going through a huge change as a business we need a solid team with us who are committed to driving our systems forward.

Youll be an important part of this. Your focus will be on developing and supporting systems that ensure our Warehouse & Distribution operation continues to remain unrivalled. You will be working within our Packing Team who currently work in a distributed microservice architecture developing and supporting code in around 20 services. These services communicate in a loosely coupled fashion using azure service bus operational data is stored in Azure Cosmos DB a highly scalable NoSQL database and aggregations for reporting and unique business requirements are stored in Azure SQL Server.

The packing team develops NuGet packages for commonly reused code and all our services follow domain-driven design and are structured in line with the clean / onion architecture aiming to abstract away dependencies and make the code easier to maintain and change. The packing team also contributes to open source projects which are used in a lot of our services.

The packing team hosts the majority of their services in AKS with a few services running in Azure App Service & Azure functions. The team are also keen on observability looking at the cutting edge of monitoring solutions making use of open telemetry.

We do also have a number of older applications for packing functions across different warehouse sites. As time progresses our intention is to bring these all into the same architecture as our newer packing application.

Youll help provide development support to internal users as well as offering occasional out-of-hours cover. Youll also use your expertise and experience to help us continually improve our processes and working practices actively enabling the department to become as efficient and effective as it can be.
