Summary of role

Reporting directly to the Head of IT, the Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer holds a critical role in ensuring the organisation’s technology landscape remains efficient, secure, and continuously evolving. This position requires close collaboration with the Solutions Architect, functioning as both an architect and a cloud specialist to guarantee that all cloud environments are optimized, compliant, and aligned with strategic business and cybersecurity objectives. Through this partnership, the role will drive innovation and uphold best practices across all cloud and infrastructure initiatives.

The Senior Cloud Infrastructure Engineer must demonstrate advanced expertise in Microsoft Azure services and architecture, complemented by a strong understanding of the broader Microsoft technology stack. The ability to manage a demanding and dynamic workload with precision and efficiency is essential.

The IT team operates within core hours of 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday through Friday, utilizing an early, mid, and late shift system. Flexibility in working hours may be required. Additionally, participation in an emergency on‑call rota covering all hours outside the core schedule is mandatory on a rotational basis. Further out‑of‑hours work, including evenings and weekends, may be necessary to support project delivery and business‑as‑usual requirements.

Objectives
  • Develop a deep understanding of our existing IT infrastructure and cyber security defences we have in place and actively search for areas of improvement.
  • Continuously monitor and optimise cloud resources for cost efficiency, performance, and reliability, leveraging automation and best practices.
  • Implement robust security controls, identity management, and compliance frameworks to meet organisational and regulatory requirements.
  • Continually monitor and implement vulnerability management processes to ensure compliance with our security accreditations.
  • Develop Infrastructure‑as‑Code solutions using Terraform to streamline provisioning and configuration.
  • Design and maintain robust disaster recovery plans and backup solutions to ensure business continuity.
  • Working in conjunction with the Solutions Architect devise solutions that minimise downtime and maintain service continuity through redundancy and fail‑over strategies.
  • Implement and maintain role‑based access controls, identity federation, and least‑privilege principles across cloud platforms.
  • Evaluate existing and emerging technologies on a regular basis and recommend areas for change as part of a continual improvement programme.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure the firm's technology environment is continually evolving and is configured in a way that provides a stable, high‑performing and secure environment that meets our user and client requirements and expectations.
  • Design, implement, and continually manage Azure cloud infrastructure to ensure scalability, security, and high availability.
  • Administer and optimise Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) environments, ensuring seamless user experience and compliance with organisational standards.
  • Develop and enforce application control policies to maintain secure and compliant application usage across the enterprise.
  • Implement and maintain Microsoft Purview data categorisation and governance policies to ensure proper data classification and compliance.
  • Manage Intune and endpoint security configurations, including device compliance, application deployment, and mobile device management.
  • Ensure adherence to Cyber Essentials requirements by implementing robust security controls and monitoring compliance across all systems.
  • Perform vulnerability patch management for cloud and on‑premises systems, ensuring timely remediation of identified risks.
  • Own and drive remediation of findings from penetration testing and phishing simulations.
  • Conduct regular backup and restore testing to validate disaster recovery plans and align with governance and security accreditation standards.
  • Respond to incident and service requests escalated via the ServiceDesk portal.
Experience and Skills Required
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft cloud services and the broader Microsoft technology stack, including Azure Active Directory, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Microsoft 365, and related SaaS offerings.
  • Expertise in Azure services and architecture, including automation using Terraform.
  • Deep understanding of cloud security principles, identity and access management, and compliance frameworks.
  • Solid understanding of a broad range of general IT topics and applications across the legal industry; iManage, 3E, Intapp, Mimecast, Tessian, Litera suite.
  • Knowledge of networking concepts (VPN, firewalls, load balancing) in cloud environments.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem‑solving skills for complex cloud and endpoint issues.
  • Strong analytical skills for vulnerability assessment and risk mitigation.
  • Continuous learning mindset to stay updated with emerging cloud technologies and security trends.

  • A high level of understanding and adherence to ITIL best practice methodologies, including problem management, change management and availability management.
