Job description

Do you have the expertise to design and justify civil and structural systems that safeguard one of the UK’s most strategically important nuclear facilities?

Can you demonstrate hands‑on experience producing and reviewing technical substantiation for reinforced concrete and steel structures under safety‑critical or high‑hazard conditions?

Are you looking for a long‑term opportunity where your engineering decisions directly support national security and help shape the future of the Royal Navy’s nuclear infrastructure?

The Opportunity

Aree you ready to take your civil engineering expertise into one of the UK’s most technically challenging and rewarding environments?

This opportunity has arisen as part of an expansion of a multidisciplinary engineering function supporting critical national infrastructure. You’ll play a key role in ensuring the design integrity, reliability and safety justification of complex civil and structural systems that operate in a highly regulated, high-hazard environment.

As part of a growing design engineering team, you’ll work on large‑scale reinforced concrete and steel infrastructure projects, applying your expertise to deliver safe, compliant and technically sound solutions. This position offers exposure to complex engineering challenges, professional development within a specialist field, and the chance to make a lasting impact through your work.

Your duties and responsibilities will be:
  • Author, develop and assess Design Substantiation Documents for major civil and structural assets.
  • Manage design changes, concessions and supporting documentation through due process.
  • Produce and maintain Examination, Inspection, Maintenance & Testing (EIMT) schedules and associated documentation.
  • Review technical reports, safety submissions and provide expert civil/structural input to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Present design substantiations to internal review panels and technical assurance groups.
  • Develop robust technical justifications for structural design modifications in high-hazard environments.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical and building services engineers to deliver integrated solutions.
You will have the following qualifications & experience:
  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or related discipline).
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in the design and assessment of reinforced concrete and steel structures.
  • Proven experience producing robust technical justifications for design modifications.
  • Incorporated Engineer status (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience contributing to multidisciplinary engineering projects.
It’s great if you also have the following
  • Chartered Engineer status.
  • Experience in marine, defence, nuclear or other high-hazard industries
  • Familiarity with safety case development techniques such as HAZID/HAZOP.
  • Knowledge of relevant design codes and standards for safety-critical structures.
The setting for the role

This full‑time position (40 hours per week) is based on a secure site within a technically advanced infrastructure environment. You’ll be working within an embedded engineering team providing design assurance, safety justification and technical support to ongoing operations and future development programmes. Due to the nature of the work, the role requires candidates eligible for Security Check (SC) clearance.
