There is an exciting opportunity within Health Services Laboratories department of Clinical Biochemistry located at the Royal Free Hospital, to recruit a Senior Specialist Biomedical Scientist (BMS). Main duties of the job

You must have demonstrable experience of working as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in a Biochemistry Laboratory.You will be responsible for the day to day running of the routine Clinical Biochemistry section and play an integral part in introducing new methodologies and technologies and taking the section forward in the new state of the art Rapid Response Laboratory (RRL).The Clinical Biochemistry service is a busy service undertaking many complex analyses and providing specialist services which include, renal and liver transplantation amongst other specialities.

Job responsibilities

It is the responsibility of the job holder to efficiently manage the routine ClinicalBiochemistry section in conjunction with the Biochemistry Lead BMS. The SNR BMS shouldensure that an efficient high quality service is provided to patients and clinicians. It isnecessary to review techniques in the context of best available in the discipline, evaluateits effectiveness, and to introduce new techniques as and when it is necessary to maintainthe highest professional and technical standards in the department.The post holder will be required to perform a wide range of routine diagnosticBiochemistry investigations, many of which are predictable in nature and with considerableautonomy, but with the ultimate responsibility for their quality being vested in the RRLManager. Working with the departmental training officer the post holder will also beresponsible for the training needs in the section and of junior and trainee staff, in line withthe training program of the RRL.

Main Duties:To perform as directed by the Biochemistry Lead BMS any reasonable duty required. Theduties below describe the general nature and level of work assigned to this job. This is notan exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities that may be required which may vary fromtime to time in the lights of changing circumstances and in consultation with the postholder. Main duties to include, but not be restricted to, the following:

Generate good quality scientific data for the Clinical Biochemistry section and beproactive in assisting to create truly integrated, high quality Biosciences laboratoryservice in conjunction with laboratory leads in other disciplines, implementingsolutions for efficient service delivery.

To undertake such measures as to ensure the smooth running of the RoutineClinical Biochemistry section, by organising available manpower within the sectionfor the smooth and efficient provision of results. This will include arranging staffrota, annual leave and monitoring and documenting sickness and other absence inthe section.

Prepare, update, monitor and enforce SOPs in the Clinical Biochemistry section.

To monitor and maintain standards of the service and to provide support andguidance to others on the technical standards required. This includes investigating,managing and monitoring incidents in line with HSL policy and in conjunction withthe quality manager and Clinical Biochemistry Lead BMS.

Participate in the quality control for the Diagnostic Laboratory, achieving KPIs, TATsand quality objectives agreed by the department and maintain internal and externalquality control in monitoring the quality of daily work. Investigateunderperformance and implement corrective action and maintain quality standardsin accordance with UKAS ISO 15189 2012 and other applicable regulatory bodies asdirected by the Clinical Biochemistry Lead BMS.When required, the post holder will provide advice to clinicians on theappropriateness of the results and on the choice of investigations in conjunctionwith the Clinical Biochemistry Lead BMS and duty Biochemist.

To maintain a professional awareness of relevant developments in scientifictechniques and endeavour to improve existing services and/or advise on theimplementation of any further service. Perform on-going validation of processes, procedures and equipment. Facilitate theevaluation of new equipment or techniques and evaluate their scientific merits andcost effectiveness in consultation with the Clinical Biochemistry Lead BMS.

To maintain a professional awareness of relevant developments in scientifictechniques, management and technology and communicate such developments torelevant parties. To ensure and assist in such research and development work as isnecessary to maintain the standard and quality of work.

Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff as required by HSL.

Be able to delegate duties and responsibilities to staff as required to ensure thesmooth operation of the section at all times.

To facilitate in the training and development of scientific and other personnelincluding SPRs and Biomedical Scientists of other disciplines in Clinical Biochemistry.

Will participate and assist in training of Biomedical Scientists in aspects of ClinicalBiochemistry and may be requested to assist in the teaching and training of othergroups within the constraints of available time and resource.
