1:1 Teaching Assistant (Full Time) at a specialist provision in Portsmouth

Location: Portsmouth

Start Date: January 2026

Contract: Long-Term (potentially permanent)

Pay: £88.50-£100 per day

About the Role

We are seeking a Specialist Teaching Assistant who has experience with those with Autism, SEMH, ADHD and Physical Disabilities to join a large specialist Primary school in Portsmouth. This rewarding role involves supporting students with autism and additional needs both 1:1 and in small group settings, helping them to access learning and achieve their full potential. You will be working within a specialist school alongside a committed team of staff who provide tailored interventions and guidance. The role will be starting from January 2026 with the school looking to make the position permanent for the right person.

The school is recognised as a Good school that offers a multisensory approach to education. The dedicated SEND team works closely with teachers, parents, and external professionals to ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed. Each adult within the school provides targeted support for students with a wide range of needs, including autism, ADHD, speech and language difficulties, and moderate to major learning challenges.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide 1:1 support to students with autism and additional needs.
  • Assist small groups of students in accessing lessons and structured activities.
  • Adapt learning materials and approaches to meet individual needs.
  • Support children to trust and thrive by building respectful relationships
  • Encourage independence, confidence, and positive social interactions.
  • Collaborate with teachers, SENCOs, and other support staff to implement personalised learning plans.
  • Monitor progress and maintain accurate records.
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all learners.
Requirements
  • Previous experience supporting students with autism or additional needs (school or care setting).
  • Strong understanding of autism, ADHD, and associated learning/behavioural needs.
  • Patient, empathetic, and resilient approach to supporting young people.
  • Excellent communication skills to work effectively with students, staff, and parents.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and confidentiality practices.
  • Enhanced DBS check (support available if required).
