SEND Learning Support Assistant – Maths Support (GCSE Maths)

Are you interested in the SEND Learning Support Assistant – Maths Support (GCSE Maths) role in the North London Area? Morgan Hunt is looking to appoint a Learning Support Assistant on a temporary contract with several colleges and sixth‑forms.

Job Type: Temporary

Location: Hornchurch

Length of contract: Temporary – Ongoing

Job Purpose: To provide tailored and high‑quality support to learners with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), specifically in Maths. This includes working with learners with profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), moderate learning difficulties (MLD), and learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities (LLDD). The role involves delivering small‑group or one‑to‑one support, collaborating with teaching staff and promoting learner access to the curriculum while fostering independence and personal development.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Learner Support
    • Provide in‑class and one‑to‑one support, ensuring learners fully engage with the subject.
    • Implement support strategies as outlined in Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and individual learning plans.
    • Develop learners’ cognitive and mathematical skills using appropriate interventions and strategies.
    • Assist with personal care tasks (e.g., toileting, feeding, hygiene) as required and ensure adherence to individual care plans.
    • Promote learner independence and confidence in Maths, both within the classroom and in the wider academic environment.
  2. Curriculum Support
    • Collaborate with teaching staff to adapt and differentiate Maths curriculum materials and teaching approaches to meet individual needs.
    • Support the delivery of Maths lessons and programmes, ensuring learning activities are accessible for all learners.
    • Assist with planning and delivering structured Maths activities that support both academic and life‑skills development.
  3. Communication and Liaison
    • Maintain clear and effective communication with learners, families/carers and other professionals involved in education.
    • Contribute to regular review meetings, including EHCP reviews, to monitor progress and adjust support plans as necessary.
    • Accurately document and report on learner progress, interventions and any changes in needs or behaviour.
  4. Professional Development
    • Attend relevant training, including safeguarding, manual handling, personal care and medical protocols.
    • Stay up to date with best practices in SEND support and Maths teaching methods.
    • Adhere to all college policies and ensure a professional, inclusive and respectful working environment.
  5. Other Duties
    • Undertake any other relevant duties as directed by line management, contributing to the overall success of the learning support team.
Person Specification
  • Experience working with SEND learners, particularly those with PMLD, MLD or LLDD.
  • A recognised qualification in GCSE Maths (or equivalent) and the ability to provide targeted support in the subject.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to adapt teaching methods to suit individual learning needs.
  • A commitment to promoting an inclusive, supportive and respectful learning environment.
