Job description

Post: Science Technician

Scale Grade: 4.7 to 4.10 £26,403.00 - £27,694.00 FTE (pro rata for part-time)

Actual salary: £21,228.00 to £22,266.00. FTE: 0.800

Hours per week: Term Time only, 35 hrs./week, 38.6 wks./year (to include 2 whole school inset days, 2 open day evenings). Part-time will be considered with some flexibility in hours.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Providing specialist assistance and knowledgeable support to science teaching staff.
  • Playing a proactive role in the developing of skills, expertise and best practice across technical staff by attending courses relevant to duties.
  • Preparing apparatus, equipment, materials and solutions. Ensuring safe and proper use of resources. Setting up and checking equipment and apparatus for use in practical classes. Retrieving and clearing away apparatus.
  • Participating in the safe organization and storage of equipment, materials and apparatus.
  • Maintaining appropriate records for control and allocation of resources, including service schedules and inventory checks.
  • Maintaining stock levels in the Science Department, ordering items as required and keeping up to date records of orders and stock allocation.
  • Safe storage and disposal of waste laboratory materials as directed in accordance with established guidelines. This includes conducting regular checks of CLEAPSS guidelines
  • First Aider for the department and all pupils in school, where training will be provided.
  • Setting up and maintaining specialist resources for use in teaching.
  • Demonstrating new or unfamiliar equipment, techniques and practical’s to staff, especially to any trainee teachers and ECTs.
  • Basic construction or modification of apparatus. This will include reasonable repairs where practical or liaising with an approved contractor(s).
  • General maintenance (including cleaning) of apparatus and equipment. Maintenance and cleaning of general laboratory services and facilities.
  • General administrative tasks and other support tasks as required consistent with the grade of the post and experience of the post holder.
