Job description
Safeguarding Children Named Nurse

The post holder will demonstrate a high level of expertise in relation to safeguarding children and provide specialist advice, education, supervision and support to health professionals.

The post holder is able to work autonomously making high level decisions and work closely with partner agencies to develop a seamless service for children and their families.

This post will be responsible for contributing to the ongoing development of clinical practice, research, audit and the development of policies, protocols and guidelines to contribute to service developments in collaboration with multi-disciplinary colleagues.

The post supports the Head of Safeguarding & Safeguarding Children Operational Manager, working in partnership with the Safeguarding Team and Named Doctors to ensure comprehensive and robust arrangements are in place for safeguarding children and young people across the OUH.

Main duties of the job
  1. Work as a member of the organisation's safeguarding/child protection team.
  2. Support all activities necessary to ensure that the organisation meets its responsibilities to safeguard/protect children and young people.
  3. Support staff in the assessment and analysis of risk for children, young people and families, contributing to formal reports as directed attending conference/strategy meetings to ensure information needed to protect is shared.
  4. Provide advice (direct and indirect) to colleagues on the assessment, treatment and clinical services for all forms of child maltreatment including neglect, emotional and physical abuse, Fabricated or Induced Illness (FII), child sexual abuse, honour-based violence, trafficking, FGM, and child sexual/drug/, exploitation.
  5. Act as an advocate for service users to ensure a child orientated approach to the delivery of care in order to meet standards within the child protection legislation and guidelines.
  6. Assess and evaluate evidence, write reports and present information to child protection conferences and related meetings.
  7. Provide advice and signposting to other professionals about legal processes, key research and policy documents.
  8. Support the Safeguarding Liaison service to ensure information is shared with primary care and children social care when children and families attend the emergency department when safeguarding concerns are identified.
  9. Be responsible to and accountable within the managerial framework of the employing organisation.

Registered nurse (part 1, 8, 12 or 15 of register depending on area of practice)
  • Registered nurse (part 1, 8, 12 or 15 of register depending on area of practice)
  • First level degree (HEI level 5 or 6) in nursing, midwifery or equivalent
  • Demonstrable post graduate level working.
  • Relevant specialist post basic programme
  • Demonstrates up to date knowledge and expertise in safeguarding children and good practice guidance
  • Completed or completing Masters level (HEI level 7) qualification
  • Specialist Public Health Practitioner
