Qualifications

  • A-levels (or equivalent) in STEM subjects such as Physics, Maths, Electronics, or Computer Science.
  • A strong interest in engineering, technology, or applied science.
  • Willingness to learn and take on new challenges in a hands-on environment.
  • Eligibility to enrol in a Level 4 or 5 Higher Apprenticeship programme.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the assembly, integration, and testing of electromechanical systems.
  • Operate and configure software tools for system control and data acquisition.
  • Support verification and validation testing of prototypes and subsystems.
  • Capture, organise, and analyse experimental data.
  • Help troubleshoot hardware issues.
  • Contribute to technical documentation.

Overview

We are offering an exciting Higher Apprenticeship opportunity for a motivated individual with A-levels to join our Cargo Research Team as a Research and Development Support Technician Apprentice. You will work hands‑on in our X‑ray Imaging Laboratory, supporting the development and testing of advanced imaging systems. This role combines practical experience with academic study, leading to a nationally recognised higher qualification in engineering or mechatronics.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in the assembly, integration, and testing of electromechanical systems and X‑ray imaging hardware.
  • Operate and configure software tools for system control and data acquisition (training provided).
  • Support verification and validation testing of prototypes and subsystems.
  • Capture, organise, and assist in the analysis of experimental data.
  • Help troubleshoot hardware issues and contribute to root‑cause investigations.
  • Maintain lab equipment and ensure a safe, organised working environment.
  • Contribute to technical documentation, including test procedures and reports.
  • Participate in technical demonstrations and training sessions for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Attend college or training provider sessions as part of the apprenticeship programme and complete all coursework and assessments.
