Overview

Are you a 3rd year student midwife about to qualify in Sept/Oct 2025? Have you obtained your NMC pin as a newly qualified Midwife in January or September 2025, and are you looking for a preceptorship opportunity? We would love to hear from you if you are able to start working this Autumn. We can offer a robust induction and preceptorship package to support you to become confident in all aspects of the role.

About the Trust and Maternity Service

Our service at North Bristol NHS Trust provides a full range of obstetric services for residents of North Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. The maternity department handles around 5,200 births each year. Our involvement in world-renowned research has led to the development of PROMPT. In our latest CQC inspection we were rated as “good” and we are committed to building on this success and encouraging all staff to have a voice and share ideas and innovations.

We operate a consultant-led Obstetric Unit with 2 HDU rooms, 9 birthing rooms and a pool room. The service includes an extensive Maternal Medicine service, including Perinatal Mental Health and a Complex Care team and a Fetal Medicine service. Our antenatal ward hosts a Triage, day assessment area and inpatient ward; our postnatal ward focuses on high-quality postnatal care.

Role and Rotations

You will be required to work a day/night shift pattern, including being part of the on-call rota, and you must have NMC registration prior to starting. As a Rotational Midwife, you will join a team of experienced midwives, doctors, maternity support workers (MSWs) and other staff committed to providing safe, high-quality and personalised care. We can offer a variety of hospital and community-based rotations to build your expertise.

Responsibilities
  • Be able to exercise clinical judgement for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care in partnership with women within the practice area.
  • Provide antenatal and postnatal care to women.
  • Provide intra-partum care and deliver babies.
  • Participate in developmental activities and preceptorship.
  • Work autonomously within guidelines and the sphere of professional practice.
  • With experience, ensure delivery of high-quality midwifery care by effectively coordinating and professionally leading the clinical midwifery team and support staff in the absence of the senior midwife.
