Job description
Role Overview

PHL Group is looking for a Forensic Healthcare Professional (FHCP) to work in custody suites covering Durham, working alongside police officers to assess and treat individuals detained in police custody.

Full training will be provided.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct clinical assessments to identify mental health conditions, substance misuse, head injuries, and other health needs.
  • Assess and address health needs of detained persons, including providing advice and guidance to custody officers and sergeants.
  • Perform forensic medical examinations and collect forensic samples for evidence in the criminal justice system.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and contemporaneous notes, including recording injuries, and logging all activities using the systems in use.
  • Determine fitness to be detained, released, interviewed, and competence to understand charge.
  • Seek telephone advice and refer cases to the Consultant Forensic Medical Examiner (FME) when required.
  • Deliver the forensic practitioner service in line with the Codes of Practice, Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, and locally agreed protocols.
Essential Criteria
  • Registered Nurse or paramedic with a minimum of 3 years of service.
  • Full membership of the NMC or HCPC.
  • Full UK driving licence with access to own vehicle for business use.
  • Competent in oral and written English.
  • Residency in the UK for at least 3 years.
  • Right to work in the UK and ability to be cleared through the Police Vetting system: Level 2 NPPV clearance.
  • DBS check required for the post.
