Duties

Recreation Fee Clerk & Technician Standard Duties

  • Serve as a front‑line, uniformed representative of the NPS, answering visitor questions and explaining the area's recreational opportunities, including NPS interpretive services, concession operated facilities and services, campground availability, hiking trails, etc.
  • Perform assignments in accordance with all NPS and U.S. Treasury regulations governing the handling of government funds.
Additional duties for GS-04
  • Operate an electronic cash register, computer, or Point of Sale (POS) system to conduct financial transactions; perform opening and closing functions; issue entrance receipts, tour tickets, permits, etc.
  • Inventory and/or restock fee program supplies and assist with placing orders and preparing requisition requests for equipment/supplies needed.
Additional duties for GS-05
  • Assist higher level personnel with auditing fee collection program components/systems (e.g. cash registers, road/trail registers, honor systems, automated fee machines or AFMs, donation boxes, etc.); assist in completing audit paperwork and documenting findings; communicate audit results to supervisor.
  • Prepare and complete remittance reports and bank deposits for funds donated and/or collected by others. Review shift reports and count funds collected; investigate and proactively resolve routine or recurring discrepancies, track overages, shortages, and errors.

  • Review and verify the functionality of new fee related systems or modifications to existing systems as a result of regulatory and program requirements.
  • Provide informal and formal training and education to employees, partners, volunteers, interns, cooperating association representatives, etc. regarding automated and non‑automated fee processes, systems, software programs, tools, etc.

  • Serve as a technical authority for the resolution of especially difficult or sensitive problems associated with the collection, remittance, and deposit of fee revenue and donations.

  • Area of Consideration for this position refers to the hiring authority/eligibility and not the physical location of the position.

  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Occupancy of government quarters may be required. Government housing may be available but is not guaranteed.

  • You may be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and/or shift work.
  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-02/15/2026 (unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement).

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your 2‑page resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part‑time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full‑time). If part‑time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro‑rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

Resumes must not exceed two single‑sided pages and resumes longer than two pages will not be accepted. You may only submit one resume.

Quality Ranking Factor: Handling Money - able to handle, collect, and account for money

For each GS level the required qualifications are listed below.

  • GS-03: either six months of progressively responsible clerical office work demonstrating ability to acquire knowledge and skills needed to perform duties of Recreation Fee Clerk; or one year of education above high school (30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours) from an accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of experience and education totaling 100% of the qualification standards.
  • GS-04: either one year of progressively responsible clerical office work; or two years of education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree; or an equivalent combination totaling 100% of qualification standards.
  • GS-05: either one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04; or four years of education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree; or an equivalent combination totaling 100% of qualification standards.
  • GS-06: either one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05; or one full year of graduate level study (18 semester hours) directly applying to the work field; or an equivalent combination totaling more than 100% of total requirement.
  • GS-07: either one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06; or one full year of graduate level study (18 semester hours) directly applying to the work field; or an equivalent combination totaling 100% of qualification standards.
Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts showing your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade‑point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if selected for this position you must provide official transcripts before you begin work. If using foreign education credentials, they must be evaluated by a private organization specializing in interpretation of foreign education programs.
