Band 6 Therapy Radiographer-Chelsea Site

The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust has an international reputation for high quality patient care, education and research and its partnership with the Institute of Cancer Research has created the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe. The Chelsea Radiotherapy department has four Varian linear accelerators, a Cyberknife and a Brachytherapy Suite. We have a Siemens Confidence CT scanner and utilise multi-modality imaging for planning.An exciting opportunity has arisen for a caring, enthusiastic, and highly motivated therapy radiographer to join our team in a Band 6 role. The ideal candidate will be given the training and support to be confident delivering advanced radiotherapy techniques such as SABR, SRS/T, IMRT, VMAT, VIBH and IGRT. The role will entail working closely with the Band 7 radiographer to provide an efficient and high-quality service for patients, therefore advanced communication skills are essential.This role will give you the opportunity to work at the cutting edge of radiotherapy development in a forward thinking and technically advance department for the benefit of your patients. We know how apprehensive people with cancer can be about their treatment and the support and encouragement that radiographers are able to provide to each patient at this stage of treatment is crucial.

Main duties of the job
  • The post-holder will be responsible for carrying out radiotherapy processes as prescribed, carefully and accurately and assisting in the operational management of a specialist highly complex radiotherapy work base, which may be a treatment unit, a brachytherapy unit, a CT scanner, VS area or a treatment preparation area, and supervising the immediate radiographic team in the absence of a team leader.
  • The post-holder will liaise with medical, physics, nursing, clerical and support staff within the department and throughout the institution. The key working relationships will be with the Senior I radiographers.

  • Responsible for the accurate preparation, planning and delivery of treatment by self and by members of the immediate team in the absence of the Senior I radiographer.
  • Maintain and develop own personal standards of care and technical ability.
  • Set high standards of technical expertise, acting as role model to junior staff members.
  • Assist in the training of team members in the operation of all equipment safely and efficiently as per manufacturers instructions, including local guidelines, under the guidance of the work base leader.
  • Meet the regulatory responsibilities defined for an operator as delegated by the Trust under the IR(ME)R regulations. With appropriate experience may be defined also as a practitioner for concomitant exposures as before.
  • Make evidence based decisions within the prescribed scope of practice. Analysis and approval of planning and treatment verification images, following designated training and adhering to work instructions and protocols.
  • Be responsible for accurate record keeping and that information required for statistics are provided as required by self and team members in the absence of the work base leader.
  • Participate in day to day and weekly quality assurance of equipment at the work base in accordance with ISO 9001 documentation, including fault reporting Promote multi-disciplinary awareness and compliance with current Radiotherapy protocols, and to attend gynae MDT.
  • Participate in the ongoing audit and development of the department ISO 9001 quality assurance programme.
  • Participate in clinical governance and clinical audit procedures as required
  • Responsible for assessing daily each patients fitness for radiotherapy procedure.
  • Guide and encourage patients through all stages of the radiotherapy process with support for both their physical and emotional reactions.
Person Specification
Education/Qualifications
  • HCPC registration as a therapeutic radiographer (requires BSc (Hons) in Radiotherapy or equivalent accredited programme
Experience
  • Experience (including as a student) of sophisticated RT equipment treating advanced techniques in a complex department, including understanding of IGRV, IMRT and imaging technologies
  • Have experience (including as a student) in paper light/paper free radiotherapy processes
  • Have participated in research/audit/service evaluation
Skills/Ability/Knowledge
  • Be an effective communicator using both written and spoken English; as will be required to manage sensitive information in situations that will require diplomacy and empathy
  • Display strong organisational and time management skills, and ability to prioritise tasks
  • Sensitive and considered manner to enable appropriate interaction with all team members, displaying appropriate confidence in own abilities
  • Computer literate with associated keyboard skills
