Who is Southwell Racecourse and Golf Course

Set in the town of Southwell near Newark, Southwell is one of only six all-weather racecourse tracks in the UK. In 2021 it switched from a fibreglass/stone surface to a Tapeta surface. With racing on both all‑weather and turf tracks throughout the year, Southwell is one of the country’s busiest racecourses. In addition, Southwell Golf Club, situated partly on the racecourse, offers two contrasting 9‑hole courses, including the signature 138‑yard par‑3 7th hole.

About the role

We’re looking for an enthusiastic and organised Racing Executive to support the Clerk of the Course at Southwell Racecourse. This hands‑on role ensures smooth, safe and compliant race‑day operations while providing outstanding service to owners, trainers and racing connections.

Development Opportunity

Once the successful candidate has passed probation, the role offers the chance to begin Clerk of the Course accreditation training supported by ARC, with opportunities to assist at other ARC racecourses.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver race meetings in line with BHA rules and regulations, providing accurate going reports and liaising with trainers and officials.
  • Work with ARC and BHA race‑planning teams to deliver a successful and competitive race programme.
  • Manage budgets, plan ahead and ensure all health and safety requirements are met.
  • Lead, motivate and develop the Grounds and Estates team.
  • Recruit and coordinate essential race‑day staff including vets, doctors and other key officials.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders, including trainers, owners, jockeys, stable staff, the BHA RCA and media.
  • Support the Clerk of the Course with all aspects of race‑day operations and owner experience.
  • Collaborate with ARC’s marketing, hospitality and events teams to ensure smooth information flow and outstanding race‑day presentation.
Qualifications
  • Strong communicator with excellent organisational and administrative skills.
  • Confident working in a fast‑paced, public‑facing environment.
  • Knowledge of horseracing essential; prior racing or event experience preferred.
  • IT proficient (Microsoft Office) and comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.

Please note this role does involve unsociable hours, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and do not discriminate based on age, disability, gender, race, religion or any other protected characteristic.

If you need any adjustments to take part in the application or interview process please let us know – we are happy to help.

We believe diversity makes us stronger and are working hard to create an environment where everyone feels safe, respected and heard.
