Overview

Step Teachers - Psychology Graduate Teaching Assistant role. Do you want to use your newfound skills to support children with emotional & behavioural needs? Have you gained 3 months or more of experience supporting children in a work, placement or voluntary capacity? This is a great first STEP in your SEN career. This is a unique vacancy at an outstanding special needs school in Salford keen to hire a Psychology Graduate Teaching Assistant with limited experience to support pupils with social & emotional needs, including those with Autism.

Responsibilities
  • Provide 1:1 & group support to KS3 students with Social, Emotional & Mental Health needs (SEMH) as well as pupils with Autism & Learning Needs.
  • Adapt your approach to each individual’s needs, levels and interests.
  • Focus on pupil progress in social, emotional & behavioural areas while supporting academic improvement.
  • Use positive reinforcement, preventative strategies, de-escalation measures and behaviour management techniques.
  • Contribute to a safe, fun and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Work with the class teacher, SENCO, SLT, parents and outside professionals such as social workers and educational psychologists.
  • Report on behaviours, incidents and disclosures to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).

  • Small classrooms of no more than 10 students with a staff team of 4 in each.

Requirements
  • Up to date CV with 10-year work history.
  • Proof of Right to Work & Address in the UK.
  • DBS certificate on the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
  • At least 2 professional references covering the last 2 years; references must evidence at least 3 months experience with children.
  • Overseas Police Check if applicable.
  • A proactive, empathetic, reliable and hard-working approach.
Benefits & Terms
  • Starting September 2025, full time, Monday to Friday, 8:30am–3:15pm.
  • Salary £90-£110/day DOE – Paid PAYE (no umbrella companies).
  • Equal pay to permanent staff from the 13th week onwards of a placement.
