University of Edinburgh - Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies

Professional Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVetMed)

Available specialties with the March 2026 Intake:

Diagnostic Imaging (Small Animal Track), Emergency and Critical Care, Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Small Animal Internal Medicine, Small Animal Surgery, Veterinary Anaesthesia and Veterinary Dermatology

Applications are invited from veterinary graduates for the above residency specialties as part of the Professional Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine full-time, postgraduate programme of studies.

These roles are based at the Easter Bush Campus, Roslin, Midlothian.

The successful candidates will be enrolled with the University of Edinburgh on the Professional Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVetMed) postgraduate programme for four years and enrol with the relevant European College for their residency training.

Eligibility and requirements
  • Prior completion of a one-year internship or at least one-year’s postgraduate clinical experience.
  • Proven enthusiasm for their chosen discipline specialty.
  • The ability to work as part of a dedicated team in a busy referral hospital.
  • A degree that is recognised by the RCVS and to be fully registered with the RCVS prior to starting on the programme.
  • Appropriate English language qualifications where applicable.
Scholarship details

The scholarships will commence in March 2026 and will run for a four-year fixed-term, subject to an annual review of progress and completion of required DVetMed components.

The scholarship attracts an annual tax-free stipend of £29,600.00 and an additional allowance of £1,500 per annum is available for approved travel, examination fees and CPD. Postgraduate fees will be paid by the University of Edinburgh at UK level.

Role and training

Out of hours duties are shared on a rota basis with other residents.
