Production Manager - Engineering - MUST HAVE CNC OR SIMILAR EXP

Contract: Full-time, Permanent (40 hours per week)

Salary: Competitive, based on experience

A long-established and family-run engineering business based in Stockport is seeking a hands‑on and experienced Production Manager. With over 30 years of expertise, the company designs and manufactures specialist machinery for the bakery, confectionery, and chilled food sectors, including bespoke depositing systems and processing lines.

The Role

This is a key leadership position overseeing the CNC Workshop, Assembly, and Finishing departments. You will manage a team of 8 and take responsibility for production planning, CAM programming, process optimisation, and quality assurance. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in CNC machining and a proactive approach to team leadership and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Production Management – Oversee daily production activities to ensure timely and efficient output. Produce CAM programs and support CNC setups (Vertical Machining Centres and CNC Lathes). Develop and maintain production procedures and schedules. Troubleshoot issues to minimise downtime and ensure smooth operations.
  • Quality Control – Implement and uphold quality assurance procedures. Resolve product quality issues promptly.
  • Team Leadership – Lead, support, and develop a team of production staff. Promote a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement. Conduct appraisals, manage objectives, and handle disciplinary matters as needed. Organise overtime to meet production targets.
  • Process Improvement – Identify and implement opportunities for efficiency and cost savings. Collaborate with the engineering team to improve production workflows. Apply best practices and modern manufacturing techniques.
  • Inventory & Supply Chain Support – Work with the procurement team to manage stock levels and ensure material/tooling availability.
  • Health & Safety – Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations. Maintain a clean, safe working environment. Conduct safety training and drills.
  • Apprenticeship Program – Provide training and mentorship to apprentices. Monitor progress and ensure development of practical skills.
Experience & Skills Required
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a manufacturing or engineering environment.
  • Proven track record in managing production teams and processes.
  • Strong CNC knowledge, including 5-axis milling, CNC lathe, and manual machining.
  • Experience with CAM software (EDGECAM or similar essential).
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement techniques.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
