Principal Transport Planner
Location: Leicester or Nottingham

Overview
An established multidisciplinary consultancy has an immediate requirement for a Principal Transport Planner to join its Transport Planning and Engineering team, based in either Leicester or Nottingham. The role involves leading the delivery of transport planning inputs for development projects and acting as a key client contact.
Key Responsibilities
- reparation of Transport Statements, Transport Assessments, and Travel Plans to support planning applications for private sector developments
- Providing advice on highway and transport-related planning issues, including access strategies and feasibility studies, in line with current policy and guidance
- Preparing preliminary horizontal designs for site access junctions and highway improvement schemes for highway authority approval
- Managing multiple projects simultaneously as lead client contact, including financial aspects such as fee proposals, forecasting, and invoicing
- Ensuring work is delivered to a high technical standard within agreed timescales
- Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with clients, design teams (internal and external), and highway authorities
- Supporting, mentoring, and providing technical guidance to other team members
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Degree or other qualification in a relevant subject (e.g. Transport, Civil Engineering, Geography, Planning)
- Proven experience in Transport Planning, managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Experience of financial elements of project management, including fee proposals, forecasting, and invoicing
- Experience acting as lead client contact and developing strong working relationships
- Knowledge and understanding of local and national transport policy, guidance, and best practice
- Experience of data collection and analysis, including commissioning surveys
- Experience using relevant software, including MS Excel, TRICS, and GIS
- Excellent report writing skills, with experience preparing Transport Statements, Transport Assessments, and Travel Plans
- Experience using junction modelling software, including Junctions (PICADY & ARCADY) and LinSig, with the ability to interpret and challenge results
- Knowledge of DfT Transport Analysis Guidance (TAG), including strategic and microsimulation modelling such as VISSIM or PARAMICS
- Experience negotiating planning conditions and Section 106 contributions for highways and transport mitigation
- Knowledge of the appeals process
- Knowledge and understanding of highway design standards, including sustainable and active travel innovations
- Excellent organisational, communication, and presentation skills
- Strong problem-solving and numeracy skills
- Ability to work efficiently within agreed timescales
- Strong personal work ethic, working both independently and as part of a team
- Leadership skills and experience developing strong working relationships

Desirable:
- 10+ years' industry experience with a commitment to continued professional development
- Postgraduate qualification in a relevant subject
- Membership of a professional institution (e.g. TPS, CIHT, IHE, ILT), preferably chartered or working towards chartership
- Experience mentoring junior team members
- Experience using AutoCAD, AutoTrack, PDS Sign & Line
- Experience in preliminary highway design, including junction design and active travel schemes
- Expert witness experience
Additional Experience:
- Strong experience using TRICS and Junctions is essential
- Experience using LinSig, GIS, AutoCAD, AutoTrack, PDS Sign/Line, and other relevant software is advantageous
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, including client liaison and financial management
