Overview

Join Powys Children’s Services as a Principal Social Worker within the Care and Support Team—a pivotal role designed for an experienced practitioner ready to lead, influence, and elevate social work practice. This full-time, ongoing locum position offers an excellent hourly rate and the opportunity to drive high standards across statutory children’s services in one of the most beautiful regions of Wales.

As the Principal Social Worker, you’ll deliver expert guidance, champion strengths-based practice, and ensure that interventions remain child-centred, evidence-informed, and fully aligned with the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014.

What You Will Do

Lead on professional standards within the Care and Support Team, modelling and promoting best practice.

Provide expert mentorship, guidance, and reflective supervision to Social Workers, Senior Practitioners, and Newly Qualified Social Workers.

Oversee the quality of assessments, plans, direct work, and case decision-making across the service.

Offer specialist consultation on complex safeguarding matters, high-risk decision-making, and escalated concerns.

Support induction, training, and ongoing development of new and existing staff, identifying team-wide practice needs.

Work closely with the Team Manager on service planning, quality assurance, and performance monitoring.

Build effective partnerships across agencies—including police, health, and education—to strengthen collaborative safeguarding practice.

Lead and contribute to the design and implementation of new policies, tools, and procedures to continuously improve service delivery.
