Practitioner Psychologist: Paediatric Respiratory & NEST

We are delighted to be recruiting for a full‑time B7 Practitioner Psychologist in the Paediatric Psychology Service at the Evelina London Children's Hospital. This exciting, varied post provides a wide range of experiences across different specialities – Respiratory and our Non‑Embedded Specialities Team (NEST) covering orthopaedics, palliative care, surgery, plastics, and intensive care.

We are looking for a motivated psychologist who is keen to work with children, young people and families with complex health conditions and associated psychological distress. You will collaborate with professional colleagues to deliver high‑quality holistic care.

Main duties of the job

The post consists of 3 days a week in Paediatric Respiratory and 2 days in the NEST team. The role requires inpatient and outpatient work; multidisciplinary team (MDT) working, team liaison, and staff consultation is a fundamental part of the work.

The respiratory service supports children and families with long‑term ventilation, complex asthma and other respiratory conditions. The post holder will be supported by a senior psychologist in the respiratory service.

Within NEST, psychologists provide support across general medicine and medical specialities that do not have an embedded psychology service. The psychologist will work within a small team of psychologists different grades.

The Paediatric Psychology Service offers opportunities for collaborative work, audit, research, teaching and training. We meet regularly to explore clinical dilemmas and share new learnings. Supervision is provided by an experienced Psychologist. Additional opportunities include journal club, reflective practice groups, peer supervision and national SIG networks. Service‑relevant CPD is actively encouraged.

Person Specification
Knowledge / Qualifications
  • Doctoral‑level training as a practitioner psychologist (Clinical, Counselling, Educational or Health Psychology) accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) / Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), including specific models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuro‑psychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
  • Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Experience
  • Experience of psychological assessment and treatment of patients with physical health problems.
  • Experience working psychologically with a wide variety of client groups across the whole life course and presenting with a full range of clinical severity, maintaining a high degree of professionalism in highly emotive and distressing situations.
  • Experience of applying psychology in different cultural contexts.
  • Experience working in a multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Experience providing consultation to other professional and non‑professional groups in the area of physical health.
Skills
  • Knowledge of psychological interventions, particularly systemic and third‑wave cognitive–behavioural approaches.
  • Skills in complex methods of psychological, neuro‑psychological and behavioural assessment and intervention requiring sustained concentration.
  • Strong ability to communicate at both written and oral levels, imparting complex, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to patients, families, carers and a wide range of lay and professional people within and outside the NHS; including negotiation, motivation, training, reassurance and empathy.
  • Experience and ability to undertake risk assessment of children and families in relation to self‑harm and harm to others, and to refer on to appropriate services as necessary.
  • Skills providing consultation to other professional and non‑professional groups.
  • Specialist knowledge of the theory of specialised psychological therapies in areas of physical health.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to maintain prolonged periods of concentration frequently throughout the day as required for complex psychological assessment and intervention.
Additional Information
  • Willingness to broaden range of skills and take initiative in both own professional development and the development of the service.
  • Experience working with interpreters.
