Responsibilities
- Moving patients in beds and chairs, as well as transporting medical equipment and furniture between departments.
- Transferring specimens, pharmacy boxes, and other important items throughout the hospital. Use of trust vehicles for pathology sample deliveries and other deliveries.
- Collecting various types of waste, including potentially hazardous materials.
- Providing assistance and direction to patients and visitors; the post holder will assist the Portering team leader, providing a customer‑focused service.
- Delivering an efficient and effective portering service to patients, visitors, and all wards/departments.
- Ensuring the patient environment is maintained to a high standard and safe working practices are adhered to in all aspects of environmental/hygiene management.
- Ensuring economic use of all materials and minimising waste.
- Maintaining good customer relations with patients and other staff groups.
- Maintaining and improving all aspects of the service.
- Participating, as appropriate, in staff involvement groups for all aspects of quality.
- Ensuring compliance with all legal requirements of food safety.
- Maintaining high standards of personal hygiene as advised by infection control.
- Ensuring compliance with all trust policies.
- Providing guidance and assistance to new or existing members of staff.
- Attending required training courses and participating in annual refresher sessions in accordance with the personal development programme.
- Collecting refuse, including clinical, domestic, confidential, special and recyclable waste from wards and departments as and when required.
- Brushing all hospital entrances to ensure high standards.
- Maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff, patients and visitors, including regular security inspections and attending security incidents. Responding to the activation of the fire alarm system.
- Issuing keys.
- Safe patient movement (including unescorted X‑ray and ECG patients).
- Movement of case notes in line with trust policy regarding confidentiality and data protection.
- Collecting soiled linen and distributing clean linen.
- Moving furniture and equipment in wards and offices when required.
- Delivering meals, stores and provisions to wards by means of using road vehicles, both electrical and fuel‑powered.
- Carrying out daily safety checks on meal‑delivery vehicles.
- Safely collecting and transporting bloods and specimens to the labs.
- Transporting blood to and from pathology and theatre.
- Assisting with the transfer of bodies from wards to the mortuary.
- Storekeeping, including storage and stock rotation.
- Postal delivery/collection as required.
- Medical gas checking and replacement.
- Car‑parking duties (includes issuing car‑park tokens).
- Complying with pharmacy work procedures as required.
