Job description
Job Summary

Porter – 37.5 hours per week at The Royal Albert Edward Infirmary. Cover colleagues during absences and provide an efficient day‑to‑day Portering service for patients, service users, transferring patients and all manner of stock items across the site.

Main Duties
  • Undertake daily tasks as directed by the Porter Supervisor, Wards and Departments.
  • Move patients (including the deceased) and goods – e.g. mail, medical gases, pharmacy items, samples, dirty linen & waste – using vehicles, powered movers and equipment.
  • Support the provision of clinical services to Wards and Departments.
  • Use electrical/conventional vehicles and machinery as directed.
  • Prompt response to radio or bleep calls and routine communication with patients, hospital staff and the public.
  • Maintain personal equipment security and report any equipment defects.
Qualifications & Experience
  • No formal qualifications required – induction period and on‑the‑job training provided.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy, good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with a range of people.
  • Flexible, able to work across a range of departments and areas and organise & prioritise day‑to‑day tasks.
  • NVQ level 1 or equivalent (desirable) and full Driving Licence (desirable).
Person Specification
  • Speak English to an appropriate standard – confidence, accuracy, correct sentence structures.
  • Work unsociable hours and be responsive to service need.
  • Contactable out of hours and flexible to provide cover for colleagues.
  • Understanding of why Portering Services are important to patient care.
  • Experience of mechanical equipment, manual handling and medical gases preferred.
