Overview

The Police Constable Entry Programme (PCEP) is a two‑year learning journey that prepares applicants to become police officers from day one. It combines classroom learning, Personal Safety Training, ICT systems, and operational policing experience.

Programme Structure

The programme follows a 20‑week initial learning phase, followed by a period of on‑the‑job training with experienced officers. In the second year there are four additional weeks focusing on leadership, inclusion, investigative skills and public protection.

  • Two years of training and experience
  • Initial 20‑week classroom and safety programme
  • On‑the‑job coaching and mentoring by tutor constables
  • Independent Patrol status upon successful completion
  • Work‑based learning and portfolio assessment
Key Responsibilities During Training

As a trainee constable you will:

  • Participate in classroom sessions covering policing theory and practice
  • Attend Personal Safety Training and first‑aid/Emergency Life Support courses
  • Learn and use ICT systems used by police forces
  • Assist in investigations, safeguarding, and operational duties under supervision
  • Maintain a full work‑based competency portfolio and complete exams, essays, and presentations
  • Develop leadership and inclusion skills during the final weeks of the programme
Essential Requirements
  • GCSE in English Language at least grade C/4 or equivalent functional skills
  • Full UK manual driving licence
  • Willingness to work full time (40 hours per week) in Bedfordshire
  • Good written and verbal English appropriate for policing contexts
  • Ability to meet health and safety standards, including screening for Dyslexia if needed

  • A starting salary of £31,164 plus a £1,500 South Eastern Allowance
