Job description
Overview

The Phlebotomy Department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) is part of the Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA), a managed pathology network with NNUH, James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn. The department provides daily ward-based phlebotomy seven days a week and outpatient phlebotomy on the NNUH site. All staff are expected to model NNUH's PRIDE values (People focused, Respect, Dedication, Integrity and Excellence) in delivering a high quality, safe and compassionate health service.

This is a full-time substantive leadership role. We are seeking a candidate from a nursing background who can apply clinical skills to support the phlebotomy service and develop leadership capabilities in managing a busy service. The post holder will act as technical and operational lead for Phlebotomy at NNUH and will be the primary point of contact for technical and clinical advice and expertise for Phlebotomy. The role includes ensuring provision of a high quality phlebotomy service, coordinating the service and liaising with multiple users across the Trust. The phlebotomy manager will line-manage a team of approximately 40 staff and coordinate a sub-team of around 10 bank staff.

Responsibilities
  • Communicate departmental and Trust initiatives and issues to staff via regular staff meetings, one-to-one discussions and written communication (electronic or printed).
  • Represent Phlebotomy at Trust and regional level by attending meetings and collaborating on service improvement projects. Develops service improvement projects and business cases and presents to senior EPA and NNUH divisional management and, where necessary, other NHS providers and external agencies.
  • Provide tact, diplomacy and persuasive skills when dealing with enquiries within the Trust and with other NHS providers and external agencies.
  • Work with Senior EPA management, Trust management and other stakeholders to develop and implement phlebotomy service plans.
  • Process and communicate complex data to facilitate dissemination and collection of information within the department and develop effective communication processes.
  • Define data collection strategies using varied methods to measure and assess service demands; analyse data to identify improvements, respond to changes in service demands and implement improvements.
