Job Summary

The Phlebotomy Department based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) is part of the Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA), a managed Pathology network involving NNUH, the James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn.

The Phlebotomy department is responsible for the provision of a phlebotomy service at NNUH only, covering daily ward‑based phlebotomy on a 7‑day per week basis as well as outpatient phlebotomy on the NNUH site. All staff are expected to act as a role model by consistently demonstrating NNUH's ‘PRIDE’ values: People focused, Respect, Dedication, Integrity and Excellence.

This is a full‑time, substantive leadership role. The successful candidate will hold a nursing background and apply clinical skills to support and develop the phlebotomy service, building leadership skills within a busy department.

The post holder will act as the technical and operational lead for Phlebotomy at NNUH, providing primary point of contact for technical and clinical advice, ensuring a high‑quality service, and coordinating the team of approximately 40 staff and a sub‑team of around 10 bank staff.

Responsibilities

• Communicate departmental and Trust initiatives and issues to staff via regular meetings, one‑to‑one discussions and written communication (electronic or printed).
• Represent Phlebotomy at Trust and regional level by attending meetings, collaborating on service‐improvement projects, proposing and developing business cases, and presenting to senior EPA and NNUH divisional management and external agencies.
• Provide a high‑level of tact, diplomacy and persuasive skills when dealing with enquiries from within the Trust and with external agencies.
• Work with Senior EPA management, Trust management and other stakeholders to develop plans and implement projects related to phlebotomy services.
• Process and communicate complex data to facilitate dissemination and collection of information within the department, developing effective communication processes.
• Define data‑collection strategies using a variety of methods and sources to measure and assess service demands; analyse and identify areas for improvement and develop strategies to respond to changing service demands.

Qualifications

• Level 5 qualification in management or equivalent experience in a management role.
• Trained and competent to perform venepuncture, with detailed knowledge of venepuncture techniques and other clinical skills.

Experience

• Experience in recruitment and interviewing.
• Experience of procurement.
• Experience of setting and planning rosters and organising staff.
