Job description

We are looking for someone to join our nursing team. They will work under the direction of the lead nurse and as part of thepractice multidisciplinary team, the post holder will be responsible forperforming venepuncture, as requested by the clinical team, to the entitledpatient population. In addition, the Phlebotomistwill be expected to support the nursing team on an as required basis.

Main duties of the job

The following are the core responsibilities ofthe Phlebotomist. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out othertasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffinglevels:

Obtainingpatient consent for the collection of a blood sample

Performingvenepuncture in accordance with practice protocols

Maintainingaccurate patient records on System1

Thecorrect labelling, packaging and storing of samples

Effectiveuse of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies

Ensuringsamples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner

Maintainingan effective liaison with the laboratory staff at

In addition to the primary responsibilities,the Phlebotomist may be requested to:

Participatein practice audit as directed by the audit lead.

Participatein local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care

Supportand participate in shared learning within the practice

Workingcollaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary forpatient related matters

  • Phlebotomist with up-to-date phlebotomy skills
  • Able to process blood samples, using Systm1 (Training provided)
