Responsibilities

As a Pupil Barrister, you will undertake a programme of practical training required to become a fully qualified practising barrister. Key responsibilities include:

  • During the first six months (Non‑Practicing Period) – carry out research, written work, attend conferences and consultations, assist in case preparation, accompany your pupil supervisor to courts and tribunals.
  • During the second six months – meet providers and clients, conduct cases before courts and tribunals, undertake written work, research the law and cases, read witness statements, offer legal advice, negotiate, prepare legal arguments and documents, question witnesses, and report results orally and in writing.
  • Overall duties – comply with the Code of Conduct, register your pupillage with the Bar Standards Board, comply with the Pupillage Handbook, complete the pupillage checklist, maintain a portfolio and work diary, complete compulsory advocacy training and the Practice Management Course, plan and review pupillage activities, arrange and attend professional courses, maintain detailed records, fulfil any duties reasonably required by your pupil supervisor, and undertake Free Representation Unit casework.
