A partner accountancy practice in York is seeking a Payroll & Bookkeeping Assistant to join their supportive team. The role involves processing payrolls accurately, maintaining records, and assisting with bookkeeping duties. Candidates should have experience in an accountancy practice and strong knowledge of UK payroll procedures. Payroll & Bookkeeping Assistant

Location: York (City Centre) - Hybrid working (2 days from home)

Hours: Full- time, Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm with an hour for lunch (35 hour week)

Benefits: 25 days holiday plus bank holidays, overtime pay, well‑established and supportive team.

We are partnering with a well‑established accountancy practice to recruit a Payroll & Bookkeeping Administrator. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with experience in practice who enjoys a varied role covering both payroll and bookkeeping.

Due to the office location, we are particularly looking for candidates who are local to York city centre or within a reasonable commute.

Key Responsibilities
  • Process weekly and monthly payrolls accurately.
  • Input hours, overtime, bonuses, and deductions.
  • Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements including tax and NI.
  • Maintain payroll records and produce reports as required.
  • Reconcile payroll accounts and resolve discrepancies promptly.
  • Keep up to date with changes in payroll legislation.
  • Reconcile bank accounts and client ledgers.
  • Process invoices and transactions accurately.
  • Submit VAT returns.
  • Assist with general bookkeeping duties across a varied client portfolio.
About You
  • Experience working in an accountancy practice is essential.
  • Strong knowledge of UK payroll procedures and compliance.
  • Confident using accountancy software such as Xero.
  • Excellent organisation and high attention to detail.
  • Able to handle sensitive information professionally and confidentially.
