A renowned healthcare trust in Leeds is seeking a Specialty Doctor in Paediatric Surgery. This role offers a full-time position with an on-call commitment of 1:10, focusing on both elective and emergency surgical care of children. The successful candidate will gain experience across various paediatric surgical sub-specialties and participate in multidisciplinary activities. Ideal for those dedicated to furthering their career in paediatric surgery with opportunities for tailored training and professional development.
Applications are invited for one Specialty Doctor (Trust Grade) post in Paediatric Surgery, equivalent to ST3 to ST5 level. The post is offered for an initial 6-month period, starting no later than March 2026, with the possibility of extension.
This Paediatric Surgical Trust Grade Doctor position within the Department of Paediatric Surgery will be tailored to an individual's training requirement.
The routine work includes care of patients in the Leeds General Infirmary, attendance at theatre lists and out-patient clinics where areas of need for sub specialisation will be addressed with their supervising consultant.
These will need to be clearly defined from the outset by the successful candidate.
The post is full time and the appointee will be expected to take part in the Specialist Registrar out of hours rota, currently 1:10. The majority of the out of hours involves general Paediatric surgery, Neonatal surgery and Trauma. The candidate will therefore be expected to have background training in Paediatric Surgery to a high level.
The department provides a wide range of General and specialist Paediatric surgery including minimal invasive surgery and robotic surgery.
These posts would benefit applicants who are committed to a career in Paediatric surgery with (for ST3+) some experience at higher StR grade or those who have completed their training and desire further specialist training in Paediatric Surgical sub-specialties.
The post holder will participate in a rolling 1:10 on-call rota at registrar level. When on call, they will act as Registrar of the Week from Monday to Thursday, and undertake one 24-hour on-call period with appropriate rest days rostered in line with working time regulations.
During on-call periods, the post holder will take senior responsibility for the assessment and management of emergency referrals and all aspects of inpatient care. They will also undertake emergency operating, with consultant support available at all times, and will liaise with other specialties as required.
When not on call, the post holder will contribute to the wider paediatric surgical service. This includes regular participation in elective and emergency theatre lists, outpatient clinics, multidisciplinary team meetings, teaching and supervision of junior trainees, and involvement in audit, research and quality‑improvement activities. Training opportunities will be tailored to the individuals learning needs and the available subspecialty rotations within the department.
The Trust Grade Dr in Paediatric Surgery is based at the Leeds General Infirmary in West Yorkshire. This role is suitable for applicants who have Paediatric surgery experience at a higher level or post CCT or equivalent. It is ideally suited to candidates wishing to work in a large teaching hospital which provides many specialist services and is ideal for anyone wishing to gain experience in various sub‑specialties in Paediatric surgery.
The department provides exposure to all surgical aspects of children ranging from 0 to 16 years. This includes general surgery of childhood to highly specialised skills in fields of Thoracic Surgery, Upper GI Surgery, Lower GI Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery, Oncology Surgery, Neonatal Surgery and Urology. There are 2 or 3 consultants per specialty providing elective specialty work and all consultants participate in acute on calls (1:10) to provide general surgery for children and trauma service.

Training opportunities will be aligned with the individuals learning needs and the availability within each firm, and they will be attached to a subspecialist team accordingly.
ST3+ trainees are expected to manage patients with an appropriate level of autonomy, supported by direct or indirect consultant supervision. They will participate in clinics, theatres, MDTs, emergency assessments and inpatient care, taking a senior role where appropriate.
All trainees are allocated an educational supervisor within the department to oversee their progression, support their development and ensure training objectives are being met.
Attendance at the daily morning handover (08:00-08:30) and Thursday Morning Grand Rounds (09:30-12:30) is expected unless clinical commitments in theatre or clinic take priority.
