Operations Engineer

Are you an experienced Operations and Maintenance professional with a Power Industry background looking for your next challenge?

Salary: Circa £60,000 per annum (plus benefits) depending on experience. Hours: 40 hours per week. Location & Postcode: Millerhill EfW Plant, Edinburgh, EH22 1SX.

As an Operations Engineer at FCC Environment, you’ll support the safe, compliant, and efficient running of the Millerhill EfW Plant, reporting directly to the Operations Manager. Contributing to the mid‑to‑long‑term strategy for operation of the plant, you’ll help drive operational improvements, ensure high standards in safety and quality, and act as a Senior Authorised Person (LV and HV) providing flexible support to the operations team. Playing a key role in leading operational outage planning in close relation with the Maintenance Department.

This vacancy is for a full‑time position, working 5 days per week.

Responsibilities
  • Identifying and implementing change programmes to enhance operational performance.
  • Supporting site projects from inception to operational rollout.
  • Collaborating effectively with operations and maintenance teams to foster a culture of teamwork.
  • Ensuring compliance with SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment, Quality) policies and procedures.
  • Communicating effectively at all levels and demonstrating a professional, flexible, and self‑motivated attitude.
  • Supporting the succession and development plan for the site by mentoring and sharing knowledge to promote internal opportunities.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Demonstrable knowledge of thermal power plant processes, safety systems, HV switching, steam cycle chemistry, performance monitoring, and technical drawing interpretation.
  • Ability to lead and coordinate annual outage planning and plant operational improvement projects.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and previous authorisation/application of Safety Rules to provide operational support as Senior Authorised Person (SAP1 & SAP2 HV), Nominated Supervisor, and Control Person as required.
  • Exhibit strong project management, organisational, and problem‑solving skills with an ability to work unsupervised and take responsibility of a workload.
  • Minimum HNC or NVQ, C&G Level 4 or higher in Engineering (or working towards), relevant experience without qualifications may be considered.
  • High level of practical operational/maintenance knowledge and experience.
  • NEBOSH or IOSH qualification preferable.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Nisoft Eclipse, Gladis, and ERP (CMMS) systems.
