Job description
Out of Hours Veterinary Surgeon
Colchester Vets4Pets Referral Hospital

We are offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced Out of Hours Veterinary Surgeon to join our dedicated and friendly team at our purpose-built, Advanced RCVS Accredited Small Animal Referral Hospital in Colchester.

This position is ideal for a confident veterinary surgeon with a strong interest in Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) who enjoys working in a collaborative, supportive environment with access to cutting‑edge facilities.

The Role:

We offer great flexibility with your rota to suit your lifestyle. Example patterns would be: 4 on/8 off, 5 on/10 off, 7 on/14 off, or we can work together to tailor a schedule that best suits you and the hospital team’s needs.

You’ll be responsible for managing emergency and urgent cases, providing overnight care for inpatients, and ensuring the highest standard of clinical care is delivered out of hours. This role offers exposure to a wide range of interesting and challenging cases, working alongside a skilled night RVN team and with full support from our day referral clinical team.

Why Join Us:
  • Work in a brand‑new, multidisciplinary Veterinary Referral Hospital, where mutual respect and collaboration are key.
  • Join a stable clinical team of over 40 talented professionals, including Advanced Practitioners and experienced certificate holders in disciplines such as Orthopaedics, Medicine, ECC, Surgery, Imaging, and Exotics.
  • Enjoy access to advanced equipment and facilities, including CT, ultrasound, endoscopy suite, operating loupes, slit lamp, CryoPen, and a fully equipped ICU.
  • 24/7 onsite hospitalisation with dedicated night RVNs and auxiliary staff.
  • Opportunity to develop your ECC skills or pursue a certificate in your specific field of interest – we support tailored CPD to help you grow.
  • Competitive salary of £80,000 per annum (FTE) depending on experience and skillset.
  • 5 on / 10 off rota gives you long, uninterrupted periods away from work to focus on your life outside of practice.
  • Supportive, positive culture with a team that truly values the role of night vets and the crucial work they do.
  • Accommodation provided if required.

Whether you’re an experienced ECC vet or a confident all‑rounder with a passion for emergency work, we’d love to hear from you. Please get in touch with JF Nell (JVP) jf.nell@vets4pets.com
