Overview

Severe Accident Analysis Opportunities – Full Time, Derby, UK – On-site. An exciting opportunity has arisen for Severe Accident Analytical Engineers to join the Rolls-Royce Submarines Team in Derby. Based in the Reactor Engineering business unit, you will work within the Containment and Consequences team to support the design, manufacture, commissioning, maintenance, and disposal of submarine reactor plants.

Severe Accident Analysis is a pivotal part of the design and safety justification of each of our nuclear propulsion plants and is vital in ensuring that we meet regulatory requirements.

What we offer

We offer excellent development, a competitive salary and exceptional benefits. These include: paid overtime, generous holiday and additional holiday allocation, pension plan with Rolls-Royce contributing up to 12%, company bonus, share schemes, employee support and assistance, employee discounts, Cycle to Work scheme, training and development opportunities.

Severe Accident Analysis opportunities are available at all levels from graduates to experienced engineers. The professional level and salary depend on skills and experience. We are an equal opportunities employer.

Role and responsibilities

The severe accident analysis team develops models of the reactor plant and containment and uses these to conduct technical analyses of the reactor plant behaviour in severe accident scenarios. The results of these simulations are used to:

  • Derive design requirements for reactor containment structures and associated components under severe accident conditions.
  • Assess radiological consequences in support of safety cases and meeting regulatory requirements such as REPPIR.
  • Support enterprise partners through bespoke severe accident assessments of existing and future products.
  • Undertake verification and validation activities of severe accident codes and models.
  • Undertake a wide range of analytical work spanning multiple disciplines, with opportunities to develop new analytical methods and research opportunities to develop capability in new analytical codes.

You will be accountable for the delivery of delegated major technical work packages to agreed time, quality, and cost. This includes severe accident analysis across the entire reactor and plant lifecycle, from concept and design through to In-Service support and decommissioning. Responsibilities include:

  • Direct responsibility for the delivery of highly specialised technical work packages in support of the submarine programme using cutting edge tools and methods, collaborating with other technical areas to deliver successful outcomes.
  • Monitoring of progress on task activities and reporting against the baseline plan.
  • Identifying and managing risks and opportunities within the scope of technical work packages.
  • Working with the Group Leader to establish commitments, budget and targets for the delegated projects and to provide regular updates on progress in line with business requirements.
Requirements / qualifications

At Rolls-Royce we embrace agility, boldness, collaboration and simplicity. Key attributes include:

  • Experience in nuclear physics, thermal hydraulics or heat transfer.
  • A strong academic background with a relevant degree (undergraduate, master's, or PhD) in engineering, physics or a scientific subject.
  • An analytical mindset, critical thinking and attention to detail.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with any audience, quickly establishing credibility and buy-in.
  • A willingness to learn from others and collaborate to achieve wider goals.
