Overview

Principal Radiation Physicist – Defence

Location: Cumbria, hybrid working available.

Salary: £50,000 – £60,000 (DOE) - Relocation packages available.

Security: UK Security Clearance is required for this role. Due to project requirements, the successful candidate must be a sole British citizen.

Copello are working with a leading defence organisation who are looking for a Principal Radiation Physicist to join their growing Nuclear engineering team. This is a rare opportunity to work on high-profile, complex engineering projects at the forefront of the UK’s defence capability

Responsibilities
  • Provide technical leadership for radiation physics activities across projects.
  • Carry out simulations, modelling, and experimental work to validate system performance.
  • Contribute to the optimisation of designs through in-depth radiological assessments.
  • Lead the development and application of bespoke analytical tools to meet programme needs.
  • Deliver high-quality shielding solutions, balancing engineering constraints and operational safety.
  • Produce, review, and sign off technical documentation and safety justifications.
Essential qualifications
  • Degree (or higher) in a relevant STEM subject such as Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, or Nuclear Engineering.
  • Strong practical knowledge of radiation transport modelling tools (e.g. MCNP, MCBEND, Attila).
  • Solid understanding of radiation physics principles.
  • Proven experience in radiation safety evaluations and radiological behaviour studies.
  • Background in radiation measurement techniques.
  • Working knowledge of the ALARP principle.
