Job description
Role

Are you aged 18 or over? Are you inclusive, compassionate and calm? Are you able to engage with young people? Do you have excellent listening skills? Do you live or work in Norfolk? You could be just the person we’re looking for.

Community panel members

With support from staff, Community Panel Volunteers meet young people and their parents/carers to support young people to take responsibility for their offending behaviour and identify ways to move forward. At the panel meeting, members support the young person and others present to talk about the offence and its impact, and draw up a programme that will enable the young person to repair some of the harm caused and address any factors in their life that may lead to them committing other offences.

Mentors

There are opportunities to train to become a mentor to young people working with the Youth Offending Team. Mentors work on a one-to-one basis with young people, providing them with a positive role model and to be there and offer encouragement to succeed.

Restorative justice

There are opportunities for members of the community to work restoratively with young people, their families and others who have experienced harm.

Becoming a volunteer

The selection processes are carefully designed to focus on assessing people’s potential rather than on qualifications and experience. They are looking for people with a commitment to working with young people and their parents / carers to prevent further offending and to support those affected deal with the impact of the offence. All volunteers would need to provide references and undertake enhanced DBS checks before starting the role. Training and ongoing supervision will be given throughout.

Time commitment

This role requires 20 hours, which can provide many useful new skills (which are helpful professionally and personally) and has much positive feedback. However, due to the nature of this training package, we recruit and train in cohorts and often there can be significant amount of time between cohorts (usually around 6 months but this can sometime be longer).

About the organisation

Norfolk Youth Offending Team (NYOT) is a multi‑agency partnership team whose aim is to prevent children and young people from offending and to help them restore the damage caused to their victims. They aspire to make Norfolk an even safer place to live and help young people achieve their full potential in life. They supervise and support young people aged 10 to 18 years who have committed offences and have received a Youth Caution, Youth Conditional Caution or an order from the Court. They also offer prevention work with young people aged 8 to 17 years who have not yet offended, but who are at risk of offending or becoming involved in anti‑social behaviour.
