Job Description: Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Tester on rolling stock vehicles

Position: Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Tester

Location: Milton Keynes

Department: Corrosion

Reports To: Team Leader

Employment Type: Full time - 40 hours per week

Salary: £Competitive

Start Date: ASAP (following successful medical and onboarding checks)

Shift Pattern: Day shift - 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM - Monday to Friday.

Summary

The Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Tester is responsible for performing tests to examine the properties of materials, components, or assemblies without causing damage. The role involves using various NDT methods to detect defects, ensure quality, and comply with safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Testing and Inspection: Conducting NDT inspections using methods such as ultrasonic, radiographic, magnetic particle, dye penetrant, eddy current, and visual testing.
  • Interpreting and evaluating test results according to applicable codes, standards, and specifications.
  • Documenting findings and preparing detailed reports on the condition and integrity of materials and structures.
  • Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Setting up, calibrating, and operating NDT equipment. Performing routine maintenance and troubleshooting of testing equipment to ensure accuracy and reliability.
  • Compliance and Safety: Adhering to industry standards, company procedures, and safety regulations during all testing processes. Ensuring proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials and waste. Following all safety procedures and guidelines to protect oneself and others from hazardous materials. Wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks, gloves, and coveralls. Adhering to environmental regulations and proper disposal methods for paint and solvents. You have a responsibility under the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974 to take reasonable care of yourself and other persons that may be affected by your acts or omissions at work, secure the health, safety and welfare of your staff at work and protect, so far as is reasonable practicable, all others against risks to their health or safety arising from your work activities and those of their staff and ensure that your duties are discharged adequately. The responsibility to achieve the duty cannot be delegated. The tasks required to discharge them can be delegated; assistance and support can be obtained; but the responsibility remains with you.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Coordinating with engineers, production teams, and clients to schedule and conduct tests. Communicating findings and recommendations clearly and effectively to stakeholders.
  • Continuous Improvement: Staying updated on the latest NDT technologies, methods, and industry best practices. Participating in training programs and obtaining necessary certifications to enhance skills and knowledge.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical degree or certification in NDT is preferred.
  • Relevant experience in non‑destructive testing, preferably in Transport.
Certifications
  • Certification in one or more NDT methods (e.g., ASNT Level I/II, ISO 9712) is highly desirable.
Skills and Competencies
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in conducting tests and interpreting results.
  • Proficiency in using NDT equipment and software.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Physical Requirements
