Overview
A Multi‑Skilled Vehicle Accident Repair Technician repairs all elements of a vehicle after it has taken some type of collision damage. This role involves learning the skills required to take an accident‑damaged vehicle through various stages of repair to the pre‑accident condition.
Training and Skill Development
- MET‑Mechanical, Electrical & Trim – refit processes of all main vehicle systems, including air conditioning, vehicle alignment and Hybrid & Electric vehicle systems.
- Panel‑repair – repair bodywork by replacing panels, filling defects and carrying out techniques such as welding, bond and riveting and correcting misalignment.
- Paint‑surface repair – prepare surfaces and carry out paint refinishing through techniques such as:
- Sealing
- Masking
- Priming
- Application of base coat & lacquer
- Repairing defects and polishing
- British Standard Welding Certificate (BS1140 & BS4872 covering .5mm to 2.5mm material including IMI AOM009)
- Refrigerant Handler
- Electric and Hybrid Repair
- Senior Accredited Assessment
Responsibilities
- Identify and apply techniques to document hazards and risks in the workplace; apply control measures.
- Apply health and safety procedures and safe systems of work in compliance with regulations and standards.
- Plan work activities and organise resources considering cost, quality, safety, security and environmental impact.
- Apply sustainability principles.
- Read and interpret information such as text, data, engineering drawings, job cards, work instructions, risk assessments, method statements, operation manuals, permits to work and instructions.
- Apply continuous improvement techniques.
- Record or enter information – paper based or electronic – including job sheets, risk assessments, equipment service records, test results, handover documents and manufacturer documentation.
- Communicate verbally with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Test the function of repaired, fitted and associated components.
- Operate stock control techniques to check, replenish and complete returns.
- Resolve problems encountered during the accident repair process; report issues that cannot be resolved.
- Operate electrical and electronic control systems such as programmable logic control systems, electrical and electronic relay systems, and electronic drive systems.
- Use diagnostic tools for fault finding, such as multi‑meters and electronic diagnostic tools.
- Remove damaged and associated mechanical components from a vehicle and re‑assemble or replace existing mechanical components.
- Remove and refit trim components; fit electrical components and systems.
- Diagnose and rectify vehicle electrical faults.
- Diagnose, remove, replace and recalibrate Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) systems and components.
- Remove, repair and replace non‑structural body panels; refurbish trim components.
- Remove, repair and replace structural body panels excluding chassis legs and related components.
- Identify and rectify vehicle body misalignment.
- Apply body filler and foundation materials; prepare and refinish metal, plastic and pre‑painted surfaces.
- Apply paint, primer and base coats; apply topcoats and clear coats to complete final refinishing operations.
- Rectify paint and preparation defects, including smart repair technologies and Paintless Dent Removal (PDR).
- Apply equity, diversity and inclusion principles.
- Apply mechanical and non‑mechanical joining techniques.
- Record planned and unplanned learning and development activities.
- Communicate in writing.
- Identify and rectify wheel misalignment (two‑wheel and four‑wheel).

Training Schedule and Additional Qualifications
- The programme lasts 30 months; training incorporates underpinning knowledge in partnership with EMTEC Colleges.
- Candidates will travel to EMTEC’s training centre in Nottingham for 24 separate 1‑week blocks, with residential accommodation and meals provided.
- Candidates will work toward achieving the Accident Repair Technician Apprenticeship Standard for the Automotive Bodyshop Industry at Level 3, and required Level 2 maths and English functional skills if not already held.
- Regular visits to the dealership from EMTEC Vocational Learning Advisors will observe evidence opportunities in the workplace.
- Candidates will engage in self‑directed learning outside normal working hours, monitored and tracked through an online e‑portal.
- Additional off‑the‑job training to achieve qualifications such as:
- British Standard Welding accreditation BS1140 & BS4872 covering .5mm to 2.5mm material (including IMI AOM009)
- MIG brazing, achieving IMI AOM133
- Bonding & Riveting EC842
- Refrigerant Handling IMIAL L3
- Electric & Hybrid Repair & Maintenance Senior Automotive Technician Accreditation
Wages and Working Hours
Wage £15,704 for your first year, with potential increase after probation. National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices applies. Hours: Monday – Friday, 08:30 – 17:00 (40 hours per week). If you are over the age of 18, the hours would be 42.5 hours per week. Start date: Monday 16 March 2026. Duration: 2 years 9 months.
