Job description

This is an excellent opportunity to join Diageo's team in Runcorn as a Microbiologist, playing a vital role in supporting full compliance with Diageo Way of Brewing Standards, Global Risk Management Standards, and food safety legislation. Working across all areas of the site, you'll carry out routine and positive-release microbiological analysis whilst providing timely, accurate data to support production and quality decisions.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Perform a wide range of microbiological techniques such as aseptic sampling, plating, staining, microscopy, and product testing.
  • Prepare analytical reagents, maintain laboratory consumable stock levels, participate in microbiological ring schemes, support internal and external audits, and engage with central experts, including weekly micro calls.
  • Support the delivery of Quality Sample Plans, contributing to food safety and compliance certifications (FSSC 22000, ISO 9000).
  • Assist with commercialisation trials and continuous improvement initiatives, while providing cross‑skilled support across the wider Quality function where required.

To be successful for this role, you'll have a degree in Microbiology, Food Science, or a related scientific subject supported by relevant laboratory experience. You'll be able to demonstrate good practical knowledge of classical microbiology techniques while ensuring GMP standards are consistently met.

In addition, you'll have:
  • Strong technical expertise in microbiology, with experience in an analytical, microbiological, or manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated analytical capability, accuracy, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills, with the ability to influence across multiple levels.
  • A background in beverage manufacturing or analysis would be an advantage.
