The medical chief registrar will be attached to the Division of Medicine and Integrated Care (MIC), which operates Trust-wide, and the acute medicine team at St Mary’s Hospital – contributing to the medical take, care of medical inpatients and same day emergency care (SDEC).

The chief registrar will have 40% protected time to develop skills and confidence in leadership, management and quality improvement. Projects will be tri-site within MIC and may also extend to other divisions. Projects may include service improvement, engagement and morale, workforce wellbeing, and sustainability.

Chief registrars benefit from access to a bespoke development programme provided by the RCP, which runs from October 2025 to June 2026 and comprises five 2-day modules that post holders are expected to attend.

The duration of the post is 1 year initially, with the possibility of extending.

This post is 60% clinical within the department of Acute Medicine at St Mary’s and 40% managerial within the MIC division.

The medical division chief registrar will work with the divisional director of medicine and the head of operations for the medical division on a number of projects. These will include:

  • Providing a bridge between senior clinical leaders, managers and the wider trainee workforce to improve communication, engagement and morale
  • Involvement in workforce planning and improving the deployment of trainees to meet service needs and improve morale
  • Service improvement projects to improve patient flow and safety within acute medicine
  • Developing and maintaining up-to-date project documentation, and producing periodic progress reports

The chief registrar will also attend departmental, divisional management and executive meetings to understand the infrastructure and running of the Trust and how wider social, political and economic factors influence health care delivery.
