Job summary

A global manufacturer in Birmingham seeks a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to deliver planned and reactive maintenance in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will have relevant engineering qualifications and at least three years of experience in industrial maintenance, ensuring optimal equipment availability and supporting apprentices. Competitive salary offered: £45,000 - £48,000.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in medium to heavy industrial maintenance.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic drawings.
  • Experience with annealing, induction furnaces, casting, or rolling equipment is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary contact for maintenance activities and contractor coordination.
  • Perform planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and respond to equipment breakdowns.
  • Lead, mentor, and support apprentices in their skill development.

Skills

Mechanical Engineering qualifications (NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, BTEC)

Job description

A global manufacturer in the Birmingham area is looking for a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to join their team on a days-based role.
Please note that very occasionally there will be a requirement to cover sickness or holidays from the shift Engineers, likely once every 3 months.

The ideal candidate will be a hard-working and adaptable Engineer with a strong technical background within a fast-paced, heavy industry manufacturing environment. Operating in a fast-paced environment, you will report to the Maintenance Team Leader and provide planned, preventative maintenance expertise along with responses to reactive breakdowns.

This is a fantastic opportunity with a multi-national company who supply to a variety of industries such as Aerospace, Automotive, Electronics, HVAC and more.

Location: Birmingham
Salary: £45,000 - £48,000
Shift: Days (Occasional shift cover)

The key responsibilities of the Mechanical Maintenance Engineer role will be:
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for annealing maintenance activities, overseeing annealing processes, TPM initiatives, and contractor coordination to ensure smooth operations and optimal equipment availability.
  • Adhere to and promote company Health, Safety & Environmental policies, completing relevant risk assessments and following all SOPs.
  • Deliver hands‑on mechanical and technical support for annealing equipment and assist with maintenance across other production lines.
  • Perform planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and TPM tasks, while responding promptly and effectively to equipment breakdowns.
  • Monitor, assess, and interpret equipment performance data to support continuous improvement and enhance reliability.
  • Work closely with production and engineering teams to plan and execute maintenance activities with minimal operational impact.
  • Lead, mentor, and support apprentices, contributing to their technical development and skill progression.
  • Manage spare parts availability and oversee on‑site contractors, ensuring all work meets company standards and compliance requirements.
  • Provide technical insight and support for engineering projects, equipment upgrades, and new machinery installations.
The key requirements of the Mechanical Maintenance Engineer will be:
  • Time‑served with relevant Mechanical Engineering qualifications (NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, BTEC; HNC desirable).
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in medium to heavy industrial maintenance.
  • Strong knowledge of fluid power systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, fabrication, and machine shop activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic drawings.
  • Experience with annealing, induction furnaces, casting, or rolling equipment is highly desirable.
  • Excellent communication, organisational skills.
  • Able to work independently, within a team, and provide cover on 4 on / 4 off shifts when required.
