Job description
Job Summary

This is a locum consultant appointment for a radiologist with subspecialty training in interventional radiology. Oncological Interventional skills and or cardiovascular reporting would be a bonus.

The post will be predominantly based at the Chelsea and Westminster site with sessions at the Royal Marsden Hospital.

The successful candidate will supervise interventional lists covering procedures such as US/CT guided biopsy and drainage procedures, venous access, urological and HPB intervention. There is also the possibility to perform and further develop more subspecialist work such as PCNL, embolisation of prostate / uterine / testicular embolisation, paediatric AVM therapy, ablation of liver and lung lesions, MSK intervention.

At present there is no dedicated peripheral vascular intervention, however, this will change in the near future. The successful candidate may wish to pursue this. Development of new techniques will be encouraged and experience in paediatric intervention would be advantageous.

Responsibilities
  • Provide high quality care to patients in accordance with Good Medical Practice.
  • Develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties of the post.
  • Ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
  • Ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and respond to their views.
  • Demonstrate, model and encourage Trust Values at all times to all patients and staff.
Research, Teaching and Training
  • Provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as agreed with the Service Lead. To contribute to training and teaching of medical trainees, medical students, other doctors in training and other staff groups.
  • Act as a clinical supervisor and appraiser as delegated by the Clinical Director/Service Lead to ensure external accreditation of training posts.
  • Collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trust’s translational research/audit portfolio, meeting full requirements of Research Governance.
  • Ensure mandatory training is up to date as per Trust policy.
  • Participate fully in continuing professional development, including optional non‑clinical training such as Leadership Training.
Performance Management
  • Work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in clinical efficiency, quality of outcomes, financial management and operational efficiency.
  • Target areas include Length of Stay (LOS) reductions, on‑day surgery admissions, reduced cancellations and DNA rates, infection control targets, re‑admission rates, cost‑improvement programmes and drug budget management.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications – Essential
  • Full GMC Registration.
  • Relevant CCT or equivalent.
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register or eligible within 6 months of appointment.
  • Good understanding of Good Medical Practice principles.
  • Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR).
  • Past record of academic achievement.
  • Publications in peer‑reviewed journals in relevant areas.
  • Experience in teaching medical trainees and other NHS professionals.
Education and Qualifications – Desirable
  • Higher Degree.
  • Additional related qualifications (e.g. BSc, BA).
  • Teaching/education qualification.
  • Level 3 Safeguarding Children qualification.
  • Management Training.
  • Understanding of business planning and hospital contracting.
Experience – Essential
  • Understanding of Clinical Governance and Audit.
  • Under and post‑graduate teaching experience.
  • Wide training in general, cross‑sectional radiology and ultrasound.
  • Interventional radiology fellowship training.
  • Experience in general ultrasound, CT reporting and MRI reporting.
  • Experience in audit and Clinical Governance and quality control in Radiology.
  • Experience of Radiology service delivery within a National Health Service department.
  • Participation in a system of annual appraisal and a recognised continuing medical education scheme.
Experience – Desirable
  • Experience in oncological intervention.
  • Experience in cardiovascular imaging.
  • Experience in paediatric intervention.
