Overview

Job summary: Locum Consultant in Critical Care Medicine based at the Royal Brompton Hospital. The successful applicant will work within Critical Care areas of the Royal Brompton Hospital, with opportunities to work across the Trust and outpatient clinics (e.g., ICU follow up).

Reporting and Eligibility

The post holder will join the existing Critical Care Team and report to the Heart Divisional Director through the Clinical Lead for Critical Care. Requirements include full GMC registration and FRCA or equivalent; a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or being within 6 months of possession at interview; and a minimum of two years\' experience in cardiac/cardiothoracic critical care at Fellow or Consultant level, with experience and accreditation in adult critical care medicine.

Main duties

Applicants will participate in and contribute to the delivery of excellent Critical Care Medicine in Level 2/3 facilities, with emphasis on governance, education, research and multispecialty collaboration that underpins excellence in Adult Intensive Care Medicine at the Royal Brompton Hospital.

Applicants are expected to participate in on-call rotas, including critical care, extracorporeal support (e.g., ECMO) and patient retrieval (training opportunities) to ensure high standards of service. As a national Severe Acute Respiratory Failure centre providing VV ECMO and a tertiary centre for complex cardiac conditions, developmental opportunities exist.

Responsibilities
  • Work with the current team of Critical Care Consultants to deliver a high-quality critical care service at the required location.
  • Work with colleagues to maintain excellence and develop a severe acute cardio-respiratory failure service including ECMO.
  • Collaborate with the research program and lead research projects as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with clinical and research data collection and presentation.
  • Participate in clinical audit and clinical governance for the Critical Care and ECMO services, including attendance at relevant meetings.
  • Undertake teaching and training locally and nationally.
  • Contribute to local, national and international development of the Critical Care service.
Person Specification

Qualifications/Training (Essential): On the Specialist Register of the GMC or within 6 months of eligibility at the time of interview; MRCP or FRCA or equivalent; CCT/CCST in ICM or CESR with advanced training in ICM; MB BS or equivalent; FFICM/EDIC or equivalent.

(Desirable): Higher degree (MSc, MD, MPhil, PhD or equivalent); Membership of FICM; MRCP or FRCA or equivalent.

Experience (Essential): Adult Critical Care Medicine; Advanced adult cardiac/cardiothoracic critical care experience; Transport of critically ill patients with severe cardio-respiratory failure with/without extracorporeal support; Advanced care of patients receiving respiratory and cardiac extracorporeal support.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities (Essential): Technical and clinical skills for Adult Critical Care Medicine; broad knowledge of cardiac and thoracic physiology; teaching skills; ability to initiate and supervise quality improvement.

(Desirable): Basic training in Echocardiography (transthoracic/transoesophageal).

Other (Essential): Commitment to continuing medical education.
