A leading UK healthcare provider is seeking a Consultant in Gastroenterology to join their dynamic department. The role involves delivering endoscopy lists and contributing to patient care within a fast-paced environment. Qualifications

Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for one candidate to join a growing, dynamic and forward‑thinking Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department at Chelsea & Westminster Foundation Trust. The candidate will join a faculty of 21 consultants working across our two hospitals: Chelsea & Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital.

The post would be based predominantly at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, with the potential to work across both sites according to the demands and vision of the department. The appointed individual is expected to uphold the Trust values to ensure the delivery of the highest quality care to patients with liver disease.

The appointee must be a member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) or equivalent and would be expected to have completed higher specialist training or equivalent in Gastroenterology. It is highly desirable that the appointee holds a higher medical degree (i.e. MD or PhD).

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register (for Gastroenterology) or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK.

Main duties

The main duties of the appointee will be centred around delivery of Endoscopy lists.

1. Outpatient endoscopy activity
  • The post holder will be expected to deliver 6 general endoscopy lists per week (OGD/colonoscopy/flexible sigmoidoscopy) in a semi‑annualised format likely in a 6‑week rolling block.
  • AM endoscopy lists are booked at 12 points and PM endoscopy lists are booked at 10 points.
  • A further 1.5 DCC will be provided to allow the post holder to do patient‑related admin related to the endoscopy lists.
  • 0.5 DCC allocation for attending MDT meetings.
  • 2 SPA sessions will be provided (1.5 core SPA, 0.5 SPA clinical audit) to make this a 10PA role.

Person specification
  • Essential – CCT (or within 6 months of CCT) or on the Specialist Register. The candidate should be accredited in both General Medicine and Gastroenterology.
  • Essential – MRCP or equivalent.
  • Essential – Full GMC registration with license to practice.
  • Desirable – Higher degree e.g. PhD or MD.
  • Essential – Broad experience in General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.
  • Essential – Teaching experience / willingness to teach medical, nursing & other staff.
  • Essential – Experience and competence in OGD and colonoscopy – JAG accredited.
  • Desirable – Experience of audit / clinical research.
  • Desirable – Experience in Upper GI Diseases (Benign and Malignant).
  • Desirable – Undertaken a management course.
  • Desirable – Understanding of the NHS and its organisation.
  • Desirable – Completed publications in appropriate journal(s).
  • Essential – Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Essential – Ability to lead a team.
  • Essential – Commitment to work with other consultants and members of the multi-disciplinary team.
