What it’s like being an Apprentice

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for a Level 6 Laboratory Technician Apprentice to join the Enva laboratory team. In this role, the Apprentice will gain hands‑on experience supporting laboratory testing, quality control, and compliance activities while completing their Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship.

This position provides a strong foundation in laboratory science, offering the chance to develop technical skills in sample analysis, equipment use, data interpretation, and quality assurance within a supportive and safety‑conscious environment.

Summary of Duties
  • Assist with the analysis of oil and fuel samples while being trained to work to UKAS‑accredited standards.
  • Learn to use laboratory equipment including Gas Chromatography, EDXRF/WDXRF, sediment testers, carbon residue testers, pH meters, ash determination equipment and other QC instrumentation.
  • Support the maintenance, calibration and quality‑assurance processes for laboratory equipment.
  • Assist with UKAS and non‑UKAS testing, following set methods and timelines.
  • Help process paperwork and records relating to UKAS, TFS, sampling, and traceability.
  • Participate in feedstock inspections and liaise with Operations regarding sampling and dosing verification.
  • Support the testing of surface water (COD, pH) and preparation of samples for external analysis.
  • Learn how to log, analyse, and interpret laboratory data accurately.
  • Contribute to running and monitoring Statistical Quality Control (SQC) samples.
  • Follow all health, safety and compliance procedures at all times.
  • Engage fully with apprenticeship learning, assessments, and development activities.

So How Does the Apprenticeship Work?

At Tiro we’re obsessed with changing lives through science and technology apprenticeships so we can’t wait to have you on board.

Over 36 months, you will develop your knowledge and skills in your chosen field to become a leader pushing development, knowledge generation and innovation. You will be provided with 6 hours per week by your employer to conduct learning and training during working hours. This can include theory training (for example virtual lessons & online learning), alongside practical training (for example shadowing, mentoring & time spent writing assignments). You’ll be trained by a team of expert tutors from Tiro as well as an experienced workplace mentor at Enva who, together, will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career.

About You

You are passionate about science and enjoy working accurately and methodically to solve problems. You are motivated to learn in both academic and practical settings and have a curious mindset, always willing to ask questions and develop your understanding. With strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritise tasks with guidance, you follow procedures carefully and work safely at all times.

You have good written and verbal communication skills, are competent with IT tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Teams, and enjoy working as part of a team to support others. You are reliable, adaptable, and professional, demonstrating integrity, honesty, and a positive approach to learning and development.

Entry Requirements

There are some minimum requirements you’ll need to meet to do an apprenticeship, these are rules set by the UK Government.

You’ll need to be over 18, not in full time education (at time of enrolment), have lived in the UK for 3 years and have the right to work in the UK.

Alongside this you will need to have a minimum of Level 3 qualifications (A‑levels, BTECs, or equivalent) & relevant work experience.
