Job description
Overview

Legal Counsel - Property – Working arrangement: Hybrid working, 3 days per week in the office
Location: Birmingham

Contract Type: Permanent, full-time
Salary: £46,000 – £65,000 DOE plus generous pension
PQE level: Open (Ideally 1–5 years)

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Property Counsel to join the in-house legal team of a major UK infrastructure organisation. This role offers high-quality, non-contentious property work with a strong focus on utilities and statutory undertaker matters, supporting the delivery and long-term operation of a nationally significant project.

The role goes well beyond standard conveyancing and involves advising on complex land and property issues across a diverse portfolio, including agricultural land, industrial sites and operational rail infrastructure. The work is long-term and evolving, with exposure to both construction-phase activity and future operational requirements.

Key responsibilities
  • Drafting and negotiating easements, wayleaves and leases with statutory undertakers across gas, water, electricity and telecoms
  • Advising on diversions of utilities and third-party assets to facilitate construction
  • Managing a varied caseload independently, with minimal supervision
  • Advising on property transactions including acquisitions, disposals and landlord and tenant matters
  • Working closely with internal stakeholders and external parties, often in robust and commercially sensitive negotiations
  • Supporting the wider property and land teams on complex, high-profile matters
About you
  • Qualified solicitor with experience in non-contentious property work
  • Exposure to utilities and statutory undertaker matters is essential
  • Confident managing your own caseload and advising autonomously
  • Comfortable operating in pressured, negotiation-heavy environments
  • Experience from private practice, in-house or the utilities / infrastructure sector welcomed

This role offers a rare opportunity to gain breadth across multiple utility regimes and statutory frameworks, build long-term stakeholder relationships, and contribute to a project with genuine legacy value. The work is expected to continue for many years, evolving as the infrastructure is delivered and moves into operation.
