At our Derby Victory Road laboratory, we are seeking a Lead Technician to join our analytical team. This is an exciting opportunity to work on advanced materials testing, contributing to high-profile projects across industries such as aerospace, power, construction, renewables, and engineering.

Essential skills & experience:

  • Degree or HND in Science / Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • Experienced in a laboratory environment (metallurgy background preferred).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of metallurgical sample preparation techniques.
  • Experience in a materials testing or analytical laboratory.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

You will also carry out sample preparation using metallurgical techniques (cutting, mounting, and polishing). This role combines hands-on technical expertise with responsibility for ensuring laboratory quality standards, turnaround times, and client requirements are consistently met.

Key activities:

  • Perform laboratory testing on metallic samples (XRF, C&S combustion, O/H/N).
  • Prepare samples using metallurgical preparation techniques.
  • Manage personal workload to meet agreed KPI turnaround targets.
  • Carry out routine quality control checks and maintain laboratory records.
  • Ensure analytical equipment is well-maintained and operating to the highest standard.
  • Liaise with the Section Head, team members, and clients regarding testing, turnaround requirements, and technical queries.
