Job Summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a pharmacist with drive and enthusiasm to join our Surgical Pharmacy team to provide 12 Month's Maternity cover for the Lead Specialist Pharmacist for Elective Surgery.

The post holder will work closely with the Principal Pharmacist for Surgery and be embedded in the multidisciplinary team whilst being responsible for providing comprehensive clinical pharmacy services as well as being at the forefront of service development.

We are looking for an experienced pharmacist with extensive clinical pharmacy knowledge and excellent communication skills. You will need to have the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team, driving change in practice and have a keen interest to actively participate in the training and development of others.

The department is supportive of further education, including leadership and prescribing qualifications if not already held, and you should be keen to continue your professional development.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for leading, providing and developing the clinical pharmacy service for the Elective Surgical patients within the surgical division. Ensuring the safe, cost effective and patient focused pharmaceutical care of patients

To provide a framework for the safe, effective and economic use of medicine resources within the specialist clinical area utilising sound medicines management and clinical governance principles

To deputise for the Principal Pharmacist for Surgical Division when required

To be an integral part of the Pre-operative assessment surgical MDT team and attend and contribute to ward rounds.

To supervise and train pharmacists / pharmacy technicians whilst on rotation, and other healthcare professionals working within the specialty.

Job responsibilities

Act as a subject matter expert on Elective Surgical patients for the pharmacy department and the wider clinical workforce.

Provide clinical pharmacy services to Elective patients throughout their secondary and tertiary care. Ensuring optimal pharmaceutical care and facilitate the safe effective supply and prescribing of medicines.

Attend Consultant led ward rounds and where appropriate be able to act as an independent non-medical prescriber. Build and sustain effective communications with other roles involved in the wider MDT team as required.

Identify potential clinical developments to the surgical Triumvirate management team and plan the implantation to ensure that services continue to meet customers requirement and income is sufficient to fund development.

Implement local and national pharmaceutical care guidelines for the Elective Surgical service in collaboration with clinical colleagues, ensuring that guidelines are available and up dated, and that the wider workforce is kept abreast of new practice or any changes to existing practices.

Act as a governance lead on medication issues relating to Elective surgery through attendance at divisional governance meetings and be responsible for actions of issues arising. Undertakes risk assessment and manages these risks as required.

Communicate highly complex pharmaceutical information to health professionals, patients and / or carers, adapted to their level of understanding to ensure safe, effective administration of treatment and promote understanding and compliance.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Masters degree in pharmacy or equivalent and 1 year pre-registration training.
  • Registered Pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (Great Britain) as attained following successful completion of 1 year competency assessment and examination.
  • Post-graduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or equivalent.

Desirable

  • MSc in clinical pharmacy.
  • Registered independent non-medical prescriber.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Professional knowledge acquired through vocational master's degree in pharmacy (4 years) or equivalent.
  • Advanced level core therapeutic knowledge and clinical skills as gained through Post-graduate clinical diploma (or equivalent)
  • Demonstrates high level of clinical knowledge, clinical reasoning and judgement; manages difficult and ambiguous problems.
  • Understanding of background to and aims of national and local healthcare policy/guidance and appreciate the implications of this on engagement and priorities.
  • Specialist clinical knowledge and skills relevant to the area of practice as developed through experience and CPD including conferences, courses etc.
  • Demonstrable experience as a specialist practitioner in hospital clinical pharmacy.
  • Experience as an advanced level clinical pharmacist practitioner, able to demonstrate a high level of competency e.g. equivalent to achieving Excellence in the majority of competencies in all clusters within the Advanced Level Competency Framework, except Management and R&D, which should be at Foundation level (as a minimum).
  • Previous specialist clinical pharmacy experience in surgery care.
  • Variety of clinical practice including medicine and surgery as a specialist.
  • Evidence of working effectively within multidisciplinary groups.
  • Previous experience of delivering training and education at post-graduate level.
  • Evidence of activity in clinical audit or drug use review to improve practice.
  • Current developments in pharmacy.
  • Changes occurring in the NHS.

Desirable

  • Delivery of a parenteral nutrition service.
  • Experience in Hospital pharmacy at management/directorate level.
  • Experience of supervision or line managing others.
