Main duties of the job

Are you a Pharmacist with a passion for developing others, leading a service and a desire to make a difference? We are looking for a motivated individual to manage our team of Foundation Pharmacists, the on-call service and to lead the pharmacist service in the dispensaries at Southampton General Hospital and at our sister site, the Royal South Hants (RSH) hospital. You will be compassionate, organised, flexible and a great communicator.

Responsibilities include:

  • Co-ordinate the rota for sixteen Foundation Pharmacists (rotation every 6-12 weeks), line manage these individuals, provide pastoral care and support, and respond to issues arising in the rotations.
  • Provide mentorship as each pharmacist is assigned a mentor who is a point of contact.
  • Responsible for the on-call service for UHS; on-call pharmacists provide a telephone-based service from home overnight, coming on site if necessary.
  • Support training and cross-cover for dispensary rotations; assist and supervise when required; work with the senior pharmacist for dispensaries for support in absence.

Job responsibilities

This role focuses on:

  • Providing management and leadership for the rotational program for band 6 foundation level pharmacists.
  • Managing the pharmacy emergency duty service provision to the trust.
  • Providing pharmacist leadership to the dispensaries at SGH and RSH.

Experience of hospital pharmacy services, teaching and training, and staff management are essential.

You may need to travel between sites. A free staff minibus is provided, or parking can be arranged for this purpose.

Preferred candidate would be able to work immediately at band 8a level. If no suitable band 8a applicant is available, the post may be offered as a development opportunity to a band 7 pharmacist willing to work towards band 8a training.

The Trust is moving towards 7-day working. You will be expected to contribute to one evening shift (5-7pm) per week in dispensary and one weekend shift (9-5pm) every 6 weeks (Saturday or Sunday).
